Flood Hits La Porte City After Big Creek Ice Jam
Snow melt and heavy rain caused a major flood in La Porte City last weekend. Firemen police and many volunteers worked overnight to sandbag streets and holes while an ice jam at the interurban railroad bridge was blasted apart with dynamite. A flood gate will help protect Bishop Avenue area and several West Main Street homes reported basement flooding with residents relocating belongings. Mrs Blanche Hackerson was evacuated but returned home as carpets were restored and residents resumed daily life.

Advisory Council Visits La Porte Schools
Iowa Vocational Education Advisory Council visited La Porte City High School on February 23 1971 to assess vocational programs in the area and hear student views. The council also toured Bash and Dysart high schools and held a public hearing 730 pm to 900 pm at the School Administration Building. Members from business industry agriculture and education advise the state board evaluate programs and conduct hearings. Ash Wednesday services at St Paul United Methodist Church will be held February 24 at pm with a service open to all Christians. Notice meeting of Support La Porte Inc committee postponed to March 1 at the NFO office.

A community cantata depicting Jesus last week will be staged on Palm Sunday at St. Pauls United Methodist Church. Two choirs formed from six local churches will rehearse separately and join for joint performances under director Priscilla Bair.

Ralph Brown Retirement Dinner Honored in La Porte City
Mr and Mrs Ralph Brown were honored at a retirement dinner Monday February 15 at Larrys Good Food in La Porte City. Brown retired after 47 years in trucking and 60 years serving the community. Dr Karl Jauch MC. About 100 attendees including board members and representatives from Fire Department Bank Coop Elevators school board and others. Rocky Brown spoke for the couples seven grandchildren and a plaque was presented. Other speakers included Pete Stewart and Harry Green.
