Gar Crash at Washburn Fatal to La Porte Man

A two car crash on Highway 218 at the north edge of Washburn last Friday afternoon killed Henry Hoyt Lamb 57 of La Porte City who was a passenger in Lee M. Jewett’s car. The other vehicle driven by Shirley Humpal of Waterloo struck head on. Lamb died at Schoitz Hospital.

Fire Department Emergency Calls February 14 1972

LPC Fire Dept. reports emergency calls including a light plant incident that affected Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. on February 14 1972 and a car fire on February 15 1972 involving Mrs. Louie Shelton with transfer to Schoitz.

Girl Scout Cookie Sale Opens Feb 25

Conestoga Council announces the annual cookie sale from February 25 to March 6 with five varieties including Savannahs and Cocoa Fudge. Troops earn 10 cents per box, with bonuses for individuals toward Camp Tahigwa fees. Proceeds fund Camp Tahigwa and troop camps Heyata and Whalen Cabin. Orders accepted from registered Juniors, Cadettes, and Seniors. delivery April 11 to 24.

Grass Greens Committee to Meet Sunday

The second meeting of the committees planning grass greens for the La Porte City Golf Club will be Sunday, Feb 27 at 1 30 p.m. Harold McCollogh of Turf Supply Co Des Moines, a former golf course contractor, will be present to lend assistance.

Death of Cecil C. Joens Is Noted Area Farmer

Cecil C. Joens 53 died Saturday morning February 19 at Scholtz Hospital in Waterloo from a heart condition suffered in recent years. Born October 29, 1918 in Traer, he was a La Porte City area farmer and served as Chairman of the Black Hawk County U.S.C. Committee. He leaves wife Thelma Kay Mosher Joens, two children Judith Hargraves and Bill Joens, one grandchild, a brother Walter W. Joens, and several surviving relatives. Services Wednesday February 23 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with burial in West View Cemetery.

Carroll Hayes Announces Candidacy for Supervisor

Carroll T. Hayes a Black Hawk County farmer and lifetime resident west of La Porte City has declared his bid for Supervisor on the Democratic ticket. He and wife with four children are active in the American Legion 4 H and he is a life member of the National Rifle Association.

Two Rams Wrestlers Reach State Tournament

La Porte City Rams send two seniors to the State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Nick Miller competes at 167 pounds with a 24-1-1 record and Galen Pettengill at 145 pounds with a 25-0-1 record. If they win the 1:15 p.m. Friday match, they wrestle again at 7:45 p.m. Friday. Consolation rounds for fifth and sixth places start Saturday at noon, with finals at 7 p.m.

City Council Adopts Two Amended Ordinances Last Monday

The La Porte City Council met last Monday and adopted two amended ordinances by suspending the rules for three readings. Ordinance 197 tightens parking limits for heavy and long vehicles on specified streets, with semi trailers banned from streets with curb and gutter. Ordinance 198 sets ambulance service and fee schedules, allowing non emergency services at the Fire Chief’s discretion, and orders payment by March 3 for prior ambulance bills while publishing remaining debtor lists in March 8 issue.

License Fee Penalty Rises to 10 Percent March 1

Black Hawk County residents without 1972 license plates face a 10 percent penalty starting March 1, with a five percent monthly rise until purchase. The minimum penalty remains $1. Owners may mail cash, check, or money order plus 25 cents handling to avoid lines. 1971 plates become void. March 14 at midnight is the final deadline to install 1972 plates. Plates issued for three years. some orders may be awaiting pickup.

Sectional Basketball Pairings For 1972 Tournament

Pairings announced for the 1972 sectional tournament show Eddyville New Sharon against the winner at 7 30 pm March 1 in Ottumwa. Belle Plaine Dysart winner faces Marshalltown March 1 at 7 pm with the Newton winner to meet March 3 at 7 30 pm in Newton. The victor advances to face Burlington District winner in Class A Substate at Ottumwa March 6 at 7 30 pm.

Parent Advisory To Meet March 8th

The Parent Advisory meeting scheduled for February 28th will be held on Wednesday, March 8th. Mr. Eldon Pyle will discuss school finance. The meeting will be in the High School Cafeteria and attendance is encouraged.
