Ralph Brown Retires After 47 Years in Trucking Business

Ralph Brown ends a 47 year trucking career with Brown Transfer in La Porte City After starting with a Model T hauling hogs he expanded to larger rigs and partnerships He moved offices along Main Street and Commercial Street and ran a million miles yearly He served on town council fire department school board and other community roles He and Mabel Hartz have two sons Ben and Bill now pursuing farming and business ventures in the area Retired Ralph and Mabel are wished well by friends and neighbors

National Honor Society To Hold Installation Monday

The La Porte City Chapter of National Honor Society will hold its installation ceremony Monday February 22 1971 at 730 PM in the high school gym. Dr Wray Silvey head of UNI school administration will be guest speaker. Public is invited to attend.

Adult Farmers Tile Discussion At High School

Adult farmers are invited to an Adult Farmer Class next Monday night in the Vo-Ag room at the high school to learn about the new plastic tile. Mitchell Murphy of Advanced Drainage Systems will present on tile performance and benefits. Lunch will be served.

Support La Porte Memberships For Public Sale

Memberships for Support La Porte Inc are now available in associate and contributing types. Associate ranges $1 to $25. contributing asks for amounts over $25 and allows withdrawal after funds are available. Each membership grants one vote. Glen Bader, Don Anton, and Ivan Johannsen lead sales with volunteers assisting. A community improvement project will be chosen at a meeting after sales. Dorothy Fleck and Ray Klein welcome improvement ideas. Plans include entering the Community Belfert program for cash prizes, running Nov 15 1970 to Nov 1 1971, pitting La Porte City against similar Iowa towns.

Annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale Starts Here Feb 26

The Conestoga Council announces advance cookie orders from February 26 to March and five varieties including Savannahs Chocolate and Vanilla Cremes Scot Teas Chocolate Mints and Fudge Cremes sell for 50c per package. Troops earn 8 cents per box, with new bonus plans for individual scouts applying to camp fees at Tahigwa. Proceeds fund troop services across an 11 percent county area and Camp Tahigway development with deliveries April 13 to 26.

Tournament Play Begins Feb 22 in Class A Playoffs

The Iowa High School Athletic Association Boys Class A sectional playoffs start February 22 at Dysart with Traer North Tama and Dysart Dysart-Geneseo drawing 7:30 p.m. games. La Porte City has a first round bye and faces Don Bosco Gilbertville on Tuesday February 23 at 7:00 p.m.
