Fi Patterson state commander of Fountainelle Iowa spoke at the Americanism meeting sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary at the high school auditorium. He stressed censoring citizenship admittance, praised Boy Scouts and highlighted last year’s baseball program fostering sportsmanship and citizenship with strong Iowa department and Legion support. Mrs Stringer spoke on Auxiliary activities and duties, urging care for veterans, while Mrs Cordray welcomed Patterson and Stringer. Despite bad weather a large LaPorte City crowd attended the program.
Shirley Ashley of La Porte City Iowa will sing soprano with the 68 member ISTC choir at a February 17 concert in the college auditorium under Maurice Gerow. The varied program includes Bach motet, Ringwald arrangement, Russian church songs, two Chinese poems, two spiritual numbers, Ave Maria and works by Brahms and F M Christiansen. Mr and Mrs Harlan Rice spent the weekend with his parents in Cedar Rapids.
The La Porte City Lions Club and their wives will host a pot luck supper for local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts next Tuesday evening February 15 in the school dining room. Supper is at 6:30 p m and parents are invited. A short program includes Kenneth Dye of Waterloo, the Boy Scout field representative, as part of National Boy Scout week observances.
The Sacred Heart Triduum of Prayer is postponed due to Father Byrne of St Paul’s hospitalization. Father Claire Drummy of Sacred Heart reports services will be rescheduled and announced later.
Bill Wagner son of Mr and Mrs Roy Wagner Sr of this city was among 630 candidates for degrees at the mid year commencement at the State University of Iowa last Saturday Feb 5 He received his Juris Doctor degree The graduating class was the largest in the history of the university to receive degrees at mid year exercises.
Instrumental music instructor Harlan Rice urges more participation in the La Porte City high school band. He highlights character building, discipline, health benefits, and community advertising value of a well trained band. Rice notes need for flutes clarinets and snare drums and asks parents to enroll their children promptly.
Rev L W Bock former pastor of the Evangelical United Brethren church Cedar Falls died at his home after two years illness. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 pm at the church with burial in Cedar Falls cemetery. He came to America at 17, led local church in the 1890s, served La Porte City as district superintendent, and remained active in ministry for 47 years. Surviving are his wife five sons eight grandchildren one great grandchild and a brother in Germany. His first wife and one son preceded him in death.
The Business and Professional Women's club planned a heart fund drive to be run by the Girl Scouts with house to house calls and displays in local stores. The meeting also elected Miss Jisse O. Rober as a delegate to the Iowa Federation midwinter board meeting at Hotel Fort Des Moines February 12 and 13. Mrs. Keith Gravenhorst announced the birth of Katherine Marie Shaw, eight pounds, born January 30 in Sacramento California, the first child of Mr. and Mrs. John Shaw Jr.
Mayor Tibbetts proclaims February 6 to 12 as Boy Scout Week in Cuy a La Porte City honoring the 38th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. The proclamation notes millions served, current enrollment of 2.2 million, and the theme Adventure that's Scouting with goals to strengthen youth and community service.
Aug Rippel 72 died after long illness in Mt. Auburn. Born August 26, 1876 in Benson County, he married June 190? and lived in Mt. Auburn. Survived by widow five sons Roy Ross and others five daughters many grandchildren two brothers two sisters. Funeral Friday at Martin-Miller with Rev Bonte Grassing officiating burial in Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
An icy county road intersection southeast of here Sunday afternoon saw a Ford driven by Donald Willworth collide with a Chevrolet driven by John Seliers near Mt. Auburn. Willworth’s car sustained $100 in damage. one truck remained undamaged. The trucks belonged to L. Frening of this city, who employs Sellers at the Lt. L. Frening elevators at Mt. Auburn. Blame is placed on the icy roads.
Mr and Mrs M C Jacobs announce a livestock and miscellaneous sale on Saturday February 12 and plan to move to Waterloo as soon as quarters are available. Jacobs is a veteran railroad man with 40 years on several lines starting with the C B & Q at Lincoln Nebraska July 6 1908. He came to La Porte City April 24 1924 and retired October 1948.
Testimony binding the city document records the seal affixed by Mayor E F Timbetts on February 3 1949. The note references a wholesome youth program and official signing of the document. The wording indicates formal city action and authorizing seal usage.
Pierre South Dakota resident John Schmitt flew to Cedar Rapids and Waterl on for snow plow repairs after heavy snowdrifts isolated farms. The trip included two stops and involved a Stinson plane with skis. He noted deep snow and packed banks across the region affecting farmers and supply runs.
Leslie K. Olson a 28 four old farmer from near Reinbeck died after a tractor accident north of Porte City on a farm near Eagle Center school corner. He was pulled out by a truck driven by his brother in law George Houlihan and died within 30 minutes. A flat tire likely caused the blowout that threw Olson from the tractor and the machine ran over him. He had prior injuries including loss of his right arm and severe leg injuries from earlier accidents. Surviving are his widow Elena two sons Gary Dean and David Leslie a daughter Connie Lee a and his father. Also three sisters Mrs George Redard La Porte City Mrs Wailmann Cedar Falls and Harold Nielsen. Funeral services were held at the American Lutheran church in Reinbeck with burial in Reinbeck cemetery. Rev Ho H Hahn officiated with a quartet singing Abide With Me and Rock of Ages. Local relatives and many from surrounding towns attended.
