Death Claims Prominent Educator Harold D Matt

Harold D Matt 71 of La Porte City died February 4 1972 at Scholtz Memorial Hospital Waterloo Iowa of a heart attack He was born June 5 1900 in Troy Iowa and retired June 1 1978 after 48 years in the Iowa public school system His career included posts as principal and superintendent at multiple schools and twenty three years as La Porte City superintendent He earned a BS from Iowa State Teachers College in 1929 and an MS from Iowa State University in 1992 He was active in civic and professional groups and married Lena Roberts in 1927 He is survived by a son a daughter three grandchildren and his mother with services held in La Porte City and Troy Iowa with burial at Troy Cemetery conducted by Pedrick Funeral Home Douds

Golf Club Plans 11 595 Renovation During 1972

La Porte City Golf Club outlines growth for 1972 with plans for a new nine hole course on 26 acres, grass greens, and a patio at the clubhouse. Renovation estimated at 11 595 dollars. Yarrow Host Hawkeye Chapter PHSA Meeting February 12

Mr and Mrs Roy Yarrow will host a meeting of the Iowa Hawkeye Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association at the VFW Hall on February 12. A report from the December 1971 30th anniversary reunion will be given. Attendees from Waterloo Cedar Falls Dubuque Cedar Rapids Davenport Decorah Grinnell Elk Horn and other cities are expected with a 7 p.m. dinner and a business meeting to follow. Herbert Hansen Elk Horn state chairman will attend. non members may contact Mr Yarrow or Pat Cunningham. Two Hawkeye Tech representatives were present. group singing and cards concluded the afternoon. The March 3 hosts are Mr and Mrs Cecil Feller and Mr and Mrs Bert Elliot.

Senior Citizens Meet for Potluck Dinner

A large attendance of Senior Citizens and guests gathered at the VFW Hall on February 4 for a 12:00 p.m. potluck meeting chaired by Frank Nachholz. Hosts were Mr. and Mrs. Russell Arthur. Students directed by Mrs. Collins performed scenes from Charlie Brown with Miss Kathy Edsill on piano, featuring Ruth Harkness, Mike Case, Jackie Sides, Tim Spence, Linda Pyle, and Chuck Engelkes.

Roy Schadey of 907 Iowa St La Porte City Iowa won a 1972 Buick Skylark in the AMOCO New Car Carnival. He entered at Beenken's Standard Service Station in Toledo Iowa as part of a nationwide giveaway by Standard Oil dealers promoting lead free gasoline. The campaign highlighted GM cars designed to run efficiently on the new pollution fighting fuel.

Proposed Housing Sought Here for St. Citizens

A La Porte City effort led by Mayor Sonia Johannsen seeks to assess demand for a senior and handicapped housing complex. A survey at City Hall would gauge need for 25 initial units, up to 40 eventually, with a shared social room and laundry. Contact the Mayor’s office to participate.

Free Booklet Gives Farm Tax Tips

The 1972 edition of the Farmer's Tax Guide is now available from county agricultural agents of the Internal Revenue Service. IRS Acting District Director for Iowa B C Voskuil said the booklet IRS Publication 225 shows how farmers should fill out the 1040 tax return and which schedules to attach. It also lists important Federal tax dates for farmers and is written in non technical language with many examples of farm transactions for Federal income tax purposes.
