Dorothy Marie Langford Walters died of a heart attack January 26 at a Volga City maternity home two and a half weeks after giving birth to a daughter. She was 20. Funeral at Zion Lutheran Elkader with burial nearby. Survived by husband Homer Walters two daughters her parents Jesse and Olive Langford and brothers Robert and Harold Langford. Born August 6 1928 in La Porte City. Lived in Wadena and Waterloo before moving to Elkader last fall.
La Porte City independents split two games with the Vinton Independents on home court last Friday. First game ended 35-29 for La Porte City, second 44-42 in overtime with Kuchan starring for Vinton scoring 26 and sealing the win with two late field goals in overtime. Burrows led La Porte City with eight points.
The regular meeting of the local American Legion post will be held at the Legion ball next Tuesday evening, Feb. 3. The meeting will start at 8 p.m. All members are urged to be present for this meeting as a very interesting program has been planned.
Jayne Veitch at Schaller operates a beauty shop from a wheelchair, serving customers with the same care as standing proprietors. She became a polio victim in 1940.
The funeral of Hate Peck aged 80 was conducted at Brandon Methodist Church Thursday at 2 p m with Rev. Stanley Kenderdine officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons Robert McKinley Tracy McKinley Robert McKinley Dale Peck Theodore Schoen Harold Beeson. Hymns Beyond the Sunset and Sweet Bye and Bye were sung by Mrs Frank Brooks and Albert Gates with Mrs Albert Gates at the piano. Interment followed in Brandon Cemetery.
A sound film My Name Is Han with a Chinese setting will be shown at the Evangelical United Brethren church Sunday evening at 7 30 under church youth sponsorship. The feature closes National Youth Week observances with a focus on native Chinese Christian work. A brief devotional precedes the showing and all are welcome.
Private Orlin D. Taylor of La Porte City Iowa now serves with the 1st Cavalry Division in Tokyo Japan assigned to the Military Police Platoon at Camp Drake. He enlisted in 1932 and plans to attend Eighth Army Ordnance School in Yokohama before working in the Motor Pool.
Snow and sub zero weather caused a rear collision two miles west of Rock Island as a Cedar Rapids crew snow plow rammed into a stalled Rocket observation car. Six passengers and one brake man were hurt, four hospitalized in Waterloo. Most injuries were cuts and bruises. one crewman suffered head lacerations and concussions. Train later resumed service. passengers were cared for in warm waiting rooms with coffee and sandwiches. Trains and buses ran late for days after the blizzard with many routes delayed.
National Scout Week will be observed from February 6 to 12 with local Boy Scouts planning activities. They start with a church service in uniform at the American Lutheran Church on Sunday morning February 6 and attend the district Court of Honor at Hudson on February 10. The Lions Club will honor the scouts as guests at their February 15 dinner.
