The Progress Review bids farewell to 1949 and looks forward to 1950 with optimism. It notes joys and losses, graduations and retirements, and envisions progress in spiritual and material life amid global uncertainties. The piece ends with warm New Year wishes from all staff.
Mr and Mrs George Bunz of Dysart will observe their golden wedding anniversary next Wednesday January 4. A noon dinner is planned for the immediate family. Open house at the farm home will run from two to four in the afternoon and from six thirty to eight thirty in the evening for relatives and friends.
Mr and Mrs Albert Cole celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary with a 6:30 PM dinner at their daughter Mrs Roger Calkins home. Attending were their children and grandchildren including Russell Cole Mrs Charlotte Turner and family R Vern Foster and Ray Geiger plus Weldon Cole and Bernie Cole who could not attend. An anniversary cake was the centerpiece and gifts were given by their children during an evening of visiting. Mrs Cole before marriage was Elta Schreiber.
Mr and Mrs Porter Shaner entertained their family at a Christmas dinner Saturday noon in their home. Present were their children and families including Mr and Mrs Clair Shaner of New Hampshire, Mr and Mrs Robert Shaner, Mr and Mrs Willard Jesse of Waterloo, Mr and Mrs Lowell Shaner and son, and Mr and Mrs Ed Benda and family.
Mr and Mrs Therm Howrey of this city celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a Sunday open house at their Main Street home and a family dinner. More than 100 relatives and friends attended from La Porte City Waterloo Mt Auburn Cedar Rapids Oelwein Jesup Allison and St Paul Minn. Four generations were present and the couple received gifts and a purse of money. They were married December 25 1899 and have lived in the area most of their lives retiring in 1928.
Four Benton county farmers near La Porte City received national honor roll certificates from the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association for dairy herds producing at least 350 pounds of butterfat on average. Oren Hoyt led with 459.4 pounds per herd year end, followed by Glenn Burrows at 406.6 pounds and Brown Swiss breeders LeRoy Young and Myron Balsh at 364.9 and 386.5 pounds respectively. Tests are monthly with Marion Chapman supervising northern Benton county.
Norbert Kettman returned to University hospital in Iowa City last Thursday for further leukemia treatment. He receives daily blood transfusions and penicillin with more treatments planned. He was a patient in November for initial transfusions. Blood donors this past week include Chet Snovel, Virgil Welsert, Kenneth Wilkinson, Wm. Heinen, Joe Heinen, Donald Johannsen, Charles Sides, Wm. Lee, Ted Bagenstos, Wm. Beale, and Wendell Pack. He plans to stay until mid next week. mail to Ward C 31, University Hospital, Iowa City.
In the Tri-County league at Tavern-on-the-Green Waterloo Arnett's took two from Watford's Skelly Service while Black Hawk Seed Farms lost three to Martin Bros Cedar Falls. La Porte City Dairy swept Imperial Cleaners at Waterloo Bowl-In to lead the midway standings. Spence brothers led La Porte City with 266 217 202 highs and 553 583 series, while Warford and Imperial totals show strong scores. Remaining games tonight pit Skelly against Black Hawk Seed Farms and Arnett's against Martin Bros Cedar Falls.
Congressman H. R. Gross begins a weekly column direct from Washington in this issue of The Progress Review. It will run on page two, Mr. Gross, during congressional sessions to give district voters a firsthand report from their representative in Washington.
In a Friday afternoon crash on highway 218 about five o clock, Gaylord Amelaera and Marti Appleton escaped serious injury. Appleton, in a Plymouth from Waterloo, braked when the preceding car stopped suddenly, veered across the road, and hit the Smelser 1936 Chevrolet toward Waterloo. Both cars left the road into a ditch. Mrs. Smelser sustained superficial injuries to her hair, forehead, nose, lip, and right hand and knee, while Mr. Smelser and Donnie were scratched and bruised. Appleton was shaken. fenders and sides suffered damage. Appleton had no insurance.

Shellsburg led 12 to 6 after the first quarter and held on to beat the La Porte City Owls 46 to 39 on Shellsburg’s court. M Hoppel scored 20 for Shellsburg while Bill Teeter matched Hopper’s 20 for the Owls. next Wednesday the Owls play DeLorbe's of Waterloo at home.
La Porte City high school's Rams will meet McKinley high of Cedar Rapids on their court Friday night in an extra game added to the schedule after last fall's announcement. The contest is to be a teacher pupil affair as Cedar Rapids coach Earl Klinzman previously coached at Anamosa where Ram coach Howard Larson Prep was. McKinley enters with a 3-1 conference record and has defeated East Waterloo and Clinton this season.
Funeral services were held in Nitands Chapel of theFlowers Redondo Beach California for Mike Fox former La Porte City resident Death attributed to heart attack and complications Rev Lawrence Warren conducted the services organ selections included The Old Rugged Cross In The Garden and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere Fox born April 1 1875 on a farm southeast of La Porte City resided here before moving to California 25 years ago He was the last surviving of six brothers and three sisters Surviving are wife three sons Everett Glen and Clifton Fox one adopted daughter Mrs Richard Price five grandchildren and four great grandchildren
La Porte City high school rolled past St. Mary's of Waterloo 60 to 30 led by Dick Brust with 36 points on 16 field goals and four free throws. The Rams boosted defense and rebounded well while holding St. Mary's to 11 baskets, building leads 16-8 after one, 32-15 at half, and 42-22 after three.
Mrs F E Lehman presents her piano and voice students in recitals at her home today. The beginners perform at 2 pm this afternoon and the advanced group at 7 30 pm this evening, with invited parents as guests.
Normandy Post No. 3983 of Veterans of Foreign Wars elected a board of directors for the servicemen's club. New officers for the coming year include Joe Vap elak Ralph Foss Walter Berryhill Sr Donald Brennan and Basil W Walden with Vapelak as membership chairman Brennan as club manager. A New Year's Eve dance was planned at the hall.
The VFW posts will host a New Year’s Eve dance for Post and Auxiliary members and guests at the servicemen’s club hall on Saturday. Steve Foote and his VFW trio provide the music with refreshments served at the close of the evening.
