Death summons Mrs H D Beal after long sickness

Mrs H D Beal longtime La Porte City resident died Saturday at Allen Memorial Hospital after a period of illness age 61 Born Oct 29 1867 in Bronson Michigan she came to Iowa as a child and lived on farms in Dysart and Bruce Township She married Harry D Beal Jan 13 1886 and later moved to La Porte City Survivors include four daughters Mrs John Bolte Mrs Ted Richards Mrs William J Grobe and Mrs Arlene Gravenhorst five grandchildren and one great grandchild plus a sister in Byron SD Funeral services were held at the La Porte City Methodist Church with Rev Oliver Jensen in charge a local quartet sang They were laid to rest beside her husband who died in 1945.

Porte City residents were urged to return Christmas Seal letters by a set date to fund the 1949 tuberculosis control program of the Black Hawk County Tuberculosis Association. Returns total about 4,954.42 dollars, just under 40 percent of the county quota of 9,000 dollars, with confidence the seal sale will meet its goal.

John Dudgeon Dies at 65 in La Porte City Home

John Dudgeon 65 died at his 9055 Madison street home Wednesday night from a long illness. He was born January 26, 1883 in Vinton and lived in several towns before moving to Waterloo then La Porte City in 1916. He married Ada Walte in 1927 and leaves wife six nephews and three nieces. Legion Donates 200 To Uniform Fund

The USS San Diego American Legion Post of La Porte City voted at the regular meeting Tuesday night to donate 200 to the fund for new uniforms for the local high school band. Legion members felt that debt freedom of their building makes the uniform fund the most urgent cause.

The body was laid to rest in the family lot in West View. Relatives and friends attending the funeral came from out of town including Duluth Minnesota Storm Lake Iowa Alta Waterloo and Cedar Rapids.

Messiah Is Planned Sunday at La Porte Methodist Church

The Messiah will be presented in La Porte Sunday evening December 19 at the Methodist church. Combined church choirs of the city will form the chorus directed by Mrs Beverlee Wilkins with about 30 voices. Soloists include Jim Gil bass George Rothmeier alto Duane Knus soprano and Beverly Sides Carol Froung are the organist. Everyone is cordially invited.

La Porte City Upsets Denver Five 45 43 in Thriller

La Porte City indepen dent basketball team edged the Denver independents 45 to 43 last Thursday on home floor. After a 1st quarter deficit they trailed 25-16 but surged to lead 35-30 by the third. The final period saw a 15-8 La Porte City run sealing the win.

Mrs Elmer Koch Breaks Leg in Porch Fall

Mrs. Elmer Koch of the town’s east side broke both leg bones above the ankle Wednesday afternoon after slipping on the front porch steps. She lay exposed in the cold until passing motorists failed to stop, then managed to reach indoors and was taken by ambulance to Presbyterian hospital for treatment of shock and leg injuries. Her husband, employed at John Deere in Waterloo, found her around six o’clock. Nearby, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Haberich and family visited Helena Fultz at St Luke’s hospital in Cedar Flopida Sunday and joined her for supper.

Rose Hayzlett Dies at 88 in Iowa Falls Friday

Rose Hayzlett of Iowa Falls died Friday at Ellsworth hospital aged 88 after a period of declining health. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. at the rural Rome church conducted by the Loyal Presbyterian pastor with burial at Slat Lodeo. Survived by four children and several grandchildren, she had long ties to La Porte City and was active in local schools and the Presbyterian church.

Big Creek 4 H Boys Hold December Meeting

The Big Creek 4 H club met December 6 in the school dining room led by President Lloyd Slager. Guest Denny, county extension director from Waterloo, attended. A Christmas party followed with the 4 H girls, gifts exchanged, songs and games, and a luncheon served. Reporter Jim Kullmer filed the item.

Services Held Wednesday for Mrs. E. Wieneke

Emma Wieneke longtime city resident died at her daughter Anita Wiederhold’s home in the south part of town. Funeral services were held Wednesday at one in the Johannsen Funeral Home with burial at Sisley Grove, Cedar Rapids connections listed among survivors and distant relatives attending from Havre Detroit and Cedar Rapids.

Annual Party For Children Next Friday

Santa Claus will visit La Porte City next Friday December 24. The Lions Club sponsors the appearance with a free Mars theatre show and treats for children afterward. Manager Marvin Fosse says a Durango Kid western, a Three Stooges comedy, and a color cartoon will run for nearly two hours of family entertainment for Trade Territory residents. Letters to Santa will be published in next week’s Progress-Review.

Lillian Hebell Jutiler service held for Jo Jubilee native

Funeral services were held for Lillian Hebell at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo after a prayer service at Parker funeral home in Jesup. Born January 10, 1909 in Jubilee Township, she lived in the Jubilee area and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church. Surviving are her mother, stepfather Henry Hoppe, two brothers Karl and Elvin Hebell, 15 nieces and nephews, and numerous relatives. Interment followed in Jubilee Lutheran Cemetery.
