A December 17 high school concert features the Advanced Band with 50 members in full uniforms, the Boys and Girls rural groups, Girls Glee Club, Elementary Band, a new Boys vocal group, and the Girls Sextette. About 500 audience members are expected, with a ten cent admission aiding group upkeep.
La Porte City children get a free two hour matinee on Friday at 1 30 pm featuring short subjects and cartoons headlined by Buster Keaton. The program runs continuously to 2 55 pm with repeats if kids wish to stay. free Christmas candy for each child. Local businesses back the community event.
One of the season’s most delightful events, the Lotus club luncheon, was held Tuesday afternoon at Mrs. Ada Narber’s home. Most members attended with roast duck the centerpiece, followed by a grab bag gift exchange and entertainment. The group planned to reconvene at Mrs. A. E. Ayers’s home on January 4.
During the next two weeks the streets will be crowded with Christmas shoppers and traffic. Pedestrians rush across intersections while bearing packages and motorists must stay alert. Let us all act to prevent accidents and keep the holiday season peaceful and safe.
Due to higher paper and supply costs the price for copies sent outside the state rises to 2.00 per year after January 1 1938. Renewals before January 1 retain the 1.50 rate. The December window remains the last chance to renew at the old price.
Rev. Bertrand Kock, former Sacred Heart pastor, now based in Memphis, sends a full letter to Progress Review readers. He outlines his new mission among 100,000 Negroes on Memphis south side, notes 136 schoolchildren under four BVM sisters, and appeals for $20,000 debt relief and ongoing support to expand St. Augustine Church and mission near 903 Walker Ave. He invites friends to visit and continues to send best wishes from La Porte City, Iowa connections.
A musical program was presented last Sunday evening in the school auditorium at Union Service. About five hundred attended. The chorus of one hundred singers delivered commendable harmony despite limited rehearsals. Miss Lillian Garrabrant directed the chorus with notable skill, and Warren Piper of Waterloo accompanied on a Hammond electric organ.
The regular meeting of the Women’s Relief Corps will be next Saturday afternoon at the usual time in the K of P hall. It will combine business and social sessions with a birthday and Christmas grab bag and other features. All members are urged to attend with a special invitation to new members. A picnic supper will be served after adjournment.
The La Porte City community reports slow final arrangements for the second Git Night due to extra work on merchants. New rules and expenses were discussed as most merchants showed more interest than in the first trial. A committee will report and resolve misunderstandings at a future meeting. payments may be made to Weldon Betts, Clifford Burr, Norman Blanchaine, at the office, or to Hay Trunnell. Son Returned. A. R. Newkirk brought home his injured son Theodore Lee from Red Wing Minnesota after ten weeks in hospital. The youth is not fully well and will stay with his parents to recuperate, with holiday visits noted as a season of rejoicing.
The Hawks open their season Monday night at 7 30 against Shellsburg here. Last season they played 24 games and won 22, taking two tournaments. They won their first game this year 28 to 24 at Shellsburg. Players include Bud Hilgenberg Art Olsen Tom Sharples M H Taylor Dale Coburn and others. Tuesday they follow with another game after the high school team vs Blan cheater.
Mrs. F W Elwell of Long Beach California died recently in Waterloo. Funeral held at an undertaking chapel with Rev Harry Moore presiding and burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Born Della Bronton in Eagle Township in 1864 she married William ONeill in 1882 who died in 1898 later marrying F W Elwell in 1922. Survived by husband lone daughter three sons two sisters and two brothers. Also D H Fehl recovering at home after a stroke.
The program lists Triumph Evening Shadows Serenade Masterbilt Overture The Victor March and Holy Night solo by William Wagner. It features advanced band, boys and girls vocal groups, elementary band, Girls Sextette, baritone solo with accompanist, andCombined Groups Loyalty Song. Performers include Roger Brown Jean Schuible and Anne Carey with various choirs under directors Miss Lillian Garrabrant and Mr Erwin J Goff.
Miss Margaret Haven accepted a position with Lea Molar Company Ford Sales and Service. Mr and Mrs F C Gravenhurst hosted relatives for Keith Gravenhurst’s birthday. Teeter and Kober joined Alpha E Alpha fraternity at State Teachers College Cedar Falls. Myrta Hager of Long Beach visited relatives in Hudson and snow. Harry Morrison recovering from hernia operation in Town City hospital shows slow progress. Maude Kline and Mary Belzer of Cavalier, with Dora Pauls and Ada Bradfeld, plan wintering in Long Beach. Ralph Brown builds sheds near the canning factory with a sales station. project to start after January 1. L D Chester and crew handle carpentry work.
The Big Creek 4 H club met at Marjorie Clark's home last Saturday December 11 to plan a dinner in Waterloo next Saturday. Gifts were exchanged and lunch served. They adjourned to meet January 8 at Artes Moran's home. Bruce Boosters 4 H girls held a Christmas party at Harley Lasher home with a picnic supper and games. Santa Claus distributed candies and apples. Officers of the Bruce Boosters included Ruth Wilson president Elizabeth Cooper vice president Eloise Green secretary Irene Deerkoop treasurer Marguerite Lasher historian and Dorothy Palmer reporter.
Thistle Rebekah lodge elected officers for the ensuing year at the regular meeting last Thursday evening. Three La Porte City women injured in a fall last week. Mrs C V Barnhart and Mrs W D Lyle each had a broken arm while Mrs Cora Bowman sustained a fractured rib. All are suffering but progressing as well as could be expected.
The school will close Friday for the holidays and reopen Monday in January. Faculty plan to spend the break at home. Basketball headlines include a Tuesday game vs Manchester with a second game featuring the flanks after the holiday break, and an Orange game postponed by rain and tee. Macy Campbell Club hosted Ladies Night in Cedar Falls. Homemaking news covers a Christmas dinner, Sophomore Snooper edition improvements, typing speed gains, and budget writing practices. Hi Y club wrapped the year with Rev. Geo Gaide’s Christmas message. Dysart boys edged La Porte City 34 to 21, with a junior game 18 to 11.
Presbyterians plan a Christmas program Monday December 20 at 7 30 P M with the Presbyterian Sunday school children and youth performing musical numbers dramatization and a Bethlehem pageant directed by L A Moore Senior depart Menture Grooming. A panoramic Bethlehem view with colors and lighting will enrich the pageant and a naval white Christmas remembrance honors the Christ Child.
A surprise announcement reports Edith Fehl of Spring Creek township and Elmer Larson of Barron Wisconsin wed in Dubuane Illinois on a Saturday December 4. Rev Sandrock officiated. The couple, un attended, will reside at the Fect farm while preparing for seasonal bia work.
After Friday evening’s game with Dysart Clare Teeter entertained coaches Art Olsen and Tom Sharples and ten players at his home. Lunch was served by his mother Mrs. G C Teeter assisted by Mrs. Carl Sawyer.
