La Porte City hosts a Christmas Treasure Hunt with readers of Progress Review and Shopper eligible for hundreds of dollars in prizes. Participants 18 plus must match numbers posted in participating merchants stores and surrender numbers to claim prizes.
The menu lists daily meals from December 13 to December 20. Items include ham with mashed potatoes and jello, hamburgers, fish on bun, chili soup, fried chicken, beef with vegetables, scalloped turkey, and sweets, each with milk. One day notes no school.
Hawkeye Institute of Technology offers a January welding class of six months to train as a combination welder. The program covers safety, AC and DC welding, gas welding for TIG and MIG, blueprint reading, welder mathematics, and job relations. Graduation occurs in September 1973.
The Mt. Auburn City Council met December 4 with all members present and approved last meeting minutes. Four resolutions were adopted paying Schmitt Hardware 65 for a lab refrigerator, honoring FHA bond interest of 2191.78, paying Matt Parrott 280 for two filing cabinets, and accepting the street budget report. The council ordered new dog license tags, a stamp, and agreed to maintain streets weather permitting. They adjourned to January 8 at 7 30 p.m. Mayor Driscol noted dog licenses and livestock permits are due January 1 and may be obtained from the Clerk, with sidewalks to be kept snow free.
The Iowa Commission on the Aging recommends inviting seniors to share Christmas meals to brighten their day. Executive secretary Earl V. Nelson highlights lonely Iowans without relatives or ones unable to join, urging widespread dinner invitations to shorten the day for the elderly.
Peoples Natural Gas will raise rates for all Iowa customers starting December 25 and January 18. The two phase increase, tied to Northern Natural Gas Company wholesale rate hikes, will add about 11 dollars per year to the typical residential bill. Northern’s higher charges take effect December 3 under bond, with possible reduction after final FPC action.
The Trinity Wesleyan Church choir will present The Saviour Has Come a Christmas Cantata by Robert A. Basham on Sunday evening December 17 at 7 30. The event invites the public to attend. The Kiddie Rare Play School staff host an open house on Saturday December 16 at 2 00 p m with a children's program, refreshments, and a briefing for parents and interested persons.
Lotus Lodge No. 206 of the IOOF held its annual homecoming dinner on Friday December 8 1972 Colin Paydon gave the invocation and after a turkey dinner prepared by Rebekah Lodge members Ollie Carson of Waterloo and several La Porte City guests attended Special guests included Fr Robert Cizek Rev Wayne Silkwood Rev Robert Ruppert Paul Bader Bill Bergmeier Dennis Kahler and Bruce Parker all of La Porte City with Ollie Carson from Waterloo and Boots Harwell of Waterloo showing slides from a Spain trip.
Sunday December 10 emergency unit John 8 Miller Jr. suffered severe finger injuries after his hand was caught in a feed mill and was admitted to Scholtz hospital. Later on December 10 Wendell Taylor reported a fire call for a minor chimney fire that caused little damage.
The US Army Recruiting Main Station Des Moines announces a Christmas holidays enlistment program. Applicants may enlist in early December and stay at home for the holidays, with different December entry windows leading to home leave and delayed basic training starting in January 1973. Women enlisting December 26-31 receive leave to January 8, 1973. inquiries advised at nearest recruiting station.
