The town's editors call for collective effort from residents and businesses to strengthen La Porte City's reputation and economy. They praise local stores and visitors' favorable impressions, urge buying local, and stress ongoing progress through shared action despite faults. A funeral note recalls John Edgar Calkins, 87, former Mt. Auburn resident.
La Porte City Rams dominated Jesup 59-30 on Tuesday, building an 11-5 first-quarter lead and widening the gap to 23-10 by halftime. Dick Brust led with 23 points, Rathjen 11, Kuldera 10, and Tone 9 as Strohecker injured his ankle but the Rams defense held firm with strong rebounding from Strohecker and Tone.
In Downtown league play at Bowl In La Porte City Dairy defeats Waterloo Seven-Up four points by sweeping all three games and earning a fourth on high series. Rev Oliver Jensen, daughter Jeanie and Glenn Burrows from La Porte City joined about 400 voices from Waterloo and nearby towns in Handel's Messiah Sunday afternoon. The Christmas concert at 4 30 in the Waterloo Auditorium drew nearly 5000 people under Maurice Gerow of Iowa State Teachers College directing. Attendees from the area included Mr and Mrs Charles Rupprich Mr and Mrs Duane Knos Mrs Ralph Brown and many others.
La Porte City Rams tie down Brandon 40-31 on the local hardwood with reserves playing major minutes. Dick Brist scores nine in the late fourth. Brandon’s Clime tops with 10 points. Rams enjoy balanced scoring throughout.
Cedar township Homemakers met December sixth at the Foulk school house. Seventeen ladies attended under supervisors Mines Russell Arthur Wilbur Briges and Wayne Foulk. They completed a persian rug display, stencil painting, and metal crafts with several fruit bowls candy dishes and ash trays finished in copper and aluminum. A fine display of painted figurines was shown. A pot luck dinner with Christmas decor followed. In business meeting Mrs Merle Anderson reported on International Relations and Mrs Frank Cotter on health. The January meeting is set for January 17 at Mrs Harold Foulk’s home with a lesson on Use and Care of Pressure Pan.
The Girl Scouts report they cannot fill all calendar orders taken earlier this fall due to supply running out at headquarters. They appreciate public interest and support and regret that some orders cannot be satisfied.
Miss Margaret Fisher of Lawler married John Hager of La Porte City in a candlelit home ceremony at Osage. Rev. M. E. Shank officiated before relatives and friends. The couple planned a honeymoon to Minneapolis then the south by plane.
Four hundred bushels of car corn donated for CROP by local farmers were auctioned Monday afternoon at the La Porte City Co-Op elevator and sold for 1.15 a bushel. Proceeds go to the county CROP fund supported by Lutheran World Relief Catholic World Service and Protestant World Service. Rev. H. E. Hahn, vice chairman of county Lutheran World Relief, led the local effort.
Bruce township 4-H members received awards at the Benton County boys 4-H annual achievement banquet held in the American Legion hall in Vinton Saturday night. Donald Taylor won a lamb producers medal, Lyle D. Taylor received a five year gold pin, Robert Bookmeier earned a bronze pin, and Dewey Taylor, club leader, was given a silver award for five years of service. Nearly 300 persons attended the event and the program that followed.
Committal services were held at West View cemetery for Clifford O'Reilly a former La Porte City resident. Funeral services were in Cedar Rapids with Rev Oliver Jensen officiating. He lived in Cedar Rapids Miami Fla and La Porte City and worked as a bus driver. He died November 30 1947 in Cedar Rapids at 430 p m. He is survived by an uncle Charles O'Reilly of Waterloo and cousins.
The Black Hawk county coordinated council unites Hook-Nin ers Munkerton Dewar Sportsmen Skaak Walton League Gedar Falls Gun Club La Porte City Gun Club to sponsor trap shoots Sunday December 11 at Cedar Falls Gun Club and La Porte City Gun Club starting 9 30 a m. Proceeds aid emergency pheasant feeding. Shells coffee and lunch available. Public invited.
Big Creek 4-H club met at Mrs. Russell Arthur's home on Monday evening November 28. They planned a radio program for KWWL on Saturday December 10 at 10 45 am featuring reports on last summer's camp by Shirley Hud and the Ames meeting by Laur Tanne Vincent. Memory record music work was also studied.
A correction explains that last week’s Thanksgiving dinner item attributed to Mt. Auburn was actually from the Gilberville news. The notice fixes the misattribution and directs readers to the proper local report.
The Progress-Review closes the first period of its Good Will subscription contest with about $1,500 in cash prizes for top candidates. The second period lowers vote values for new subscriptions and renewals, urging supporters to act before Friday December 16 at 6 P.M. to boost standings and ensure credit for renewals.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie McLachlan, Cedar township's longtime resident, were held Monday at Pape funeral home in Clinton with burial in Oakland cemetery. She died Friday at the home of her nephew George Bradstream, where she had lived 13 years. Jennie Bradstream, born November 17, 1860, in Lyons, Iowa, moved to Cedar township in 1884 and taught rural schools. She married Arch McLachlan in 1895, moved to Clinton in 1902, and he died in 1932. Surviving besides the nephew she lived with is another nephew Burton Bradstream of Phoenix.
Grades one to five of the local school will present a Christmas program in the school auditorium at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning December 14. Christmas songs will be featured. Parents and friends of the children are welcome and invited to attend.
Bruce township P. M. A. reelected all existing officers at a meeting in the township hall last Wednesday evening to serve in 1950. Officers include Rudy Baker chairman Henry Thede second member Herman Fleck third member Donald Rosauer first alternate and Morris King second alternate.
Marjorie Goings and Meryl Karr wed in a Saturday ceremony at 7 30 p m at the Goings home in Waterloo. Dr Frank W Court performed the single ring service in the presence of close family. The couple will reside on a farm west of town with the bride employed at Black s in Waterloo continuing as a clerk.
Cedar Falls reports Carol Froning of La Forte City will join the Iowa State Teachers College mixed chorus in Handel’s Messiah. The concert Sunday December 11 at 4 p.m. will be held in the men’s gymnasium to accommodate a larger crowd with Myron Russell directing the 300-voice chorus and 55-member orchestra. Maurice Gerow is preparing the chorus.
Brownie Scouts meet after school on Monday evenings. In November they sewed curtains for a storage cupboard in Miss Rodas' room. They are now making Christmas gifts and head bands and planning a Christmas party. Atty. William Wagner attended the income tax school in Des Moines from Thursday to Saturday of this week.
