La Porte City Council approves an east side storm sewer project while tentatively scrapping the west side plan funded by General Obligation Bonds totaling about 105000. A dispute with the School Board over routing the main trunk line to Big Creek centers on easements and potential school property impact.
The La Porte City Ag Museum will be open Sunday September 3 from 2 to p.m. Hours are set with no admission charge. New items were added this summer and since last month, with potential more to come this week. The museum hopes to reach 1000 visitors, inviting the public to attend.
City offices and Progress Review close Monday September 4 for Labor Day. Progress Review moves copy and ad deadline to 5 PM Friday night.
Invitations have been mailed to every airport in Town for a Labor Day open house at Nichols Airport in La Porte City. Breakfast runs 7 to 10 am rain or shine with fly ins receiving a free meal. driving guests pay $1 for adults and 50 cents for children.
The La Porte City Community School Board met August 21 1972 with all members present. Dale Adams took the oath as Treasurer and filed nomination papers. The board discussed routing the city storm sewer and approved a plan to route north of the senior high building. They adopted a free lunch policy and informed parents. Resignations of Paul Huffman and Max Willison were noted, Mary Sullivan and Joe Bishop hired. The district will seek a 2 percent mill levy for future building needs and bus driver pay was raised to 1.70 per hour. Next meeting September 16 1972.
Waterloo hosts An Evening to Honor H R Gross on September 9 with an Iowa beer dinner at Electric Park Ballroom. Attending will be Donald E. Johnson and Durward G. Hall, with Governor Ray among officials and GOP leaders. tickets reportedly selling out across 18 counties.
Fred Koch, Waterloo volunteer county savings bonds chairman, reported July sales of Series E and H bonds total $352,548. The seven month total stands at 32,668,530, reaching 69 percent of the 1972 quota for the county.
Nomination papers for two three year terms were filed by Homer Darnell Art Mc Laughlin and Ron Maley incumbents. Layton Stump seeks a two year term to fill the remaining Paul Huffman seat. Dale Adams files for a one year treasurer term. Election set September 11 1972 with a 2 percent mill levy proposal. Polls 7 am to 8 pm in the Mayor's office. Only Black Hawk County residents must be registered.
John S. Miller of La Porte City was elected president of the Black Hawk County Dairy Herd Improvement Association. New officers include Vice President Burton Newgard Cedar Falls Secretary Tom Hesse Waterloo and Treasurer Mrs. Stan Hilmer Dunkerton. Directors are North District Tom Hesse and Ralph Leymaster Cedar Falls South District John Miller and Dean Ward La Porte City Holdover directors include Newgard Hilmer Pullin and Hansen. Don Peterson of Waterloo remains Field Supervisor.
Wednesday August 23 a Dan Weaver from St. Francis was in a car wreck and Sunday August 27 Norma Pierce from Scholtz had an accident while riding a horse.
