Reports from La Porte recount a season climax as the Red Birds and Clutier vie for the Corn Alley League crown. The deciding championship game is Sunday at Dysart’s neutral diamond with 2:15 PM start, aiming to determine the league representative for the tournament.
La Porte five birds outslug Garrison 8 to 3 to pull even atop the Corn Valley League standings with an 8 2 record. Jack Lesh allowed three hits and struck out 13 in a masterful complete game, driving in two with a two run double. The playoff for the league title will be next Sunday at Dy sart field, with the winner earning a spot in the Waterloo Courier Tournament of Champions starting Aug 24. Local visitors Mr and Mrs L D Hodges of Los Angeles joined Marian Tutt and family in town for a short visit.
Mt Auburn residents spent Sunday at Pine Lake State Park Eldora. Mrs E E Shafer of Vinton visited her daughter Mrs Leslie Moore. The Taylor family spent the weekend in Luana with relatives. George Kline Sr of Waterloo returned home after visiting his son. Leslie Moore attended a Moore reunion in Marseilles Illinois. Cedar Township Farm Club met at the IOOF hall Mt Auburn. Entertainment committees were led by Mr and Mrs Chester Johnson and others. Refreshments were provided by Mr and Mrs Fred Gimm and others. D Westlake of Kansas City visited the Grace home. Elvin Woods moved from Vinton to the Mae property. Anna Dunkelberger and daughter Thelma of Vinton stayed with the Mengers. Truman Jackson bought the Donald Johnson property on Third Street and will move Sept 1. Johnson is listed in the army awaiting call.
The Future Homemakers of America at La Porte City High School plan a field trip to Cedar Rapids on Friday August 27. They will tour the Quaker Oats plant at 9:00 AM, shop before lunch, tour the Penick and Ford plant at 1:00 PM, then visit the modern homemaking department at McKinley High School. Transportation costs are fifty cents. The bus leaves the Home Economics building at 7:30 AM. Miss Ryan will chaperon. Contact Donna Tibbetts or Maxine Bookmeier by August 25.
Nuptial vows repeated by Miss Betty West of this vicinity and Pearl Duin of Vinton at St Marys Catholic rectory in Vinton. The wedding dinner and reception followed at the bride’s parents home with relatives from La Porte City and Waterloo. The couple will live in Vinton where the groom is engaged in trucking. The bride, oldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Louis West, worked at a local store before moving to Vinton. Nearby exhibitors at the Benton County Fair included Art McLaughlin Donald Brandt Allan jehristian Franck Christian and Lyle Taylor with several firsts and a reserve champion in various breeds.
Reunion notes list Carls of Brandon Class of 1940 gathering with attendees including Ruby Shepherd and family. Several names are garbled in the OCR and some lines reference local attendees and meals, reflecting a small town reunion scene from Brandon in May.
Vraneis Christian & Sons plan cattle displays at the fair with Shorthorn stock shown by the Rivers and Waters families. The event features prize judging, with more than $200,000 in stock offers and live cattle from nearby herds, as spectators observe main livestock classes.

Waverly hosts a district convention from April 24 to 27 at St Pauls Lutheran Church. The event features Rev B Ian, Geo Loeb, Dr John Hittner, and Dr Un Ol Wartburg in leadership roles with about 150 congregations and 0,000 members in the American Lutheran Church.
Geneseo consolidated district to begin the new term on Monday August 30 with a half day. Six new instructors join the faculty under Supt John Simpson. Mrs A J McIntosh learned of her father C J Eyres's death in Le Mars Iowa. Dr and Mrs McIntosh plan to return Tuesday after visiting. The Browns spent summer at Bowling Green State University and visited relatives in Des Moines and Des Moines area.
Port City artist Mrs Lela Briggs will compete for SH75 cash prizes at the State Fair Art Salon. She entered water colors and drawings, as the fair runs August 27 to September 3, featuring Iowa artists and an international exhibit by American and foreign painters.
A gasoline range leak sparked a small fire at the J E Ruggle home at 7 Wesley Lane yesterday morning. Mrs Stulinart, alone at the time, discovered flames on the kitchen floor by Garsteve and turned in an alarm. Firemen arrived to extinguish the blaze, limiting damage to a hole in a rug and a burned section of baseboard.
Mr and Mrs Wilbur Loeb welcomed a baby girl named Lois Elam at Allen Memorial hospital Wednesday morning. The Loeb family also has two other children, a boy and a girl.
