A dinner honoring Fran Allison will be held at Larry's Good Food on Friday evening September 3. Tickets go on sale first come first served at the La Porte City Library on Thursday and Friday August 26 and 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. Tickets cost 3 dollars.
Fred Koch of Waterloo reports June savings bond sales in Black Hawk County at 325 239 dollars, six-month total 1 945 184 dollars reaching 57 percent of the 1971 quota. Iowa June sales total 6 278 529 dollars, up over 16 percent from last year, with a six-month state total of 44 124 569 dollars and 59 percent of the 1971 goal. Clarke County leads at mid year with 90 percent, followed by Mahaska and Warren at 68 percent, Adams 87 percent, Adair and Ringgold 82 percent, Greene 81 percent, Jefferson 79 percent, and O’Brien and East Pottawattamie at 77 percent.
Iowa veterans with service from January 31, 1955, to June 1, 1966, face a May 31, 1974 cut-off to use GI Bill education benefits. Those discharged after June 1, 1966, have more time. eight years from discharge applies, starting June 1, 1966 for predates. Eligibility requires honorable discharge and 181 days of service after January 41, 1955, with VA Des Moines available for details.
Mike Pirillo Jr. made a hole in one on No 7 at the La Porte City course on Saturday August 14. It marks the fourth ace in nine seasons and reflects growing golfing interest as the school starts classes and more youths take up the sport this summer and fall.
The Lane Western Co. of Ames drills a new well for La Porte City Utility Co across from the light plant on Locust Street. The 200 to 400 foot well ties into Main Street water main, with testing and a pump and filter house to follow before operation. Well casing is 16 inches and cemented 93 feet deep. no completion date set.
The City Council approved the proposed 1972 city budget of 609 336 at a public hearing Monday night. The budget rises by 90 253 from 1971 and funds improvements by La Porte City Utilities. Millage falls from 29.504 in 1971 to 28.910 this year due to higher valuation.
Parents of La Porte City Elementary students are asked to visit the school office on August 18 or 19 to pay fees and complete registrations for the 1971-72 year. New district families should also register. Book rental ranges by grade and lunch milk ticket options are listed, with insurance details to follow.
The issue lists two accident coverage plans for students from kindergarten through grade six with premiums of 4.50 and 16.00 for 24 hour coverage. Brochures are available at the office during student registration. Kindergarten through sixth graders start school at 8:25 am, with bus riders dismissed at 4:20 pm and town residents at 3:25 pm.
Black Hawk County Park Producers announce a one day tour on Friday August 27 with three farm visits in Butler County to view remodeled farrowing nurseries and finishing units plus new structures and an 1800 feeder pig unit. The afternoon features lunch at Hampton smorgasbord and a stop at Farmers Hybrid Swine Facilities. Cost is 5 dollars including transport by air conditioned chartered bus and meal. Reservation due by Monday August 23 at the Black Hawk County Extension Office Waterloo Iowa.
Dr. Steve Hedden D.V.M. will move from Schaller to La Porte City to join Dr. A J McIntosh on August 23. A Waterloo native and West High graduate, he earned his Iowa State University degree in 1970 and has worked in large and small animal practice with equine experience.
After a Palm Sunday Cantata drew a full house, a mixed age community choir directed by Priscilla Bair plans another effort for La Porte City. Rehearsals start Thursday at 7 30 PM in the Chapel of St Pauls United Methodist Church.
