Richard Hughes son of Mr and Mrs Warren Hughes of Mt Auburn graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Town State Teachers College Cedar Falls today. He belonged to Sigma Tau Gamma national fraternity Baker Hall council and future teachers groups. He will teach in Ledyard public schools next year. He is a La Porte City high school graduate.

Leota Grobe Injured in Highway 218 Crash

Mrs. Leota Grobe, hospitalized with a fractured pelvic bone, was injured Tuesday evening when her car collided with a vehicle driven by Earl Buchanan on Highway 218 north of Waterloo near the Ranch House. Grobe, her daughter Le Da of Minneapolis, and driver Roy Oliver of Mt. Pleasant were involved. no other injuries reported.

Confederate and Yankee Marines Reunite After 31 Years

Ralph Abe Foss of the mountains of Tennessee met Ernest Knappers from Belvidere on a honeymoon visit with his wife. Both served as U S Marines in 1918 during the big offensive that helped end the war. They shared memories of friends and the old days while touring the community and marveling at local farm buildings and modern methods.

Death Summons Mrs. M. Ashley This Morning

Mrs Monroe Ashley, aged 88, longtime La Porte City resident, died this morning at St Francis hospital Waterloo after a fall at her daughter Mrs Ralph Foss home. She had been in poor health for years due to injuries from a broken hip suffered Monday. She moved in with her daughter and was taken to the hospital Tuesday. Local People Win Prizes at Benton Fair

The Taylor brothers Lytle Merlin and Donald Taylors Bruce township sons of Mr and Mrs Dewey Taylor earned multiple ribbons at the Benton county fair. Donald won grand championship for a wether aged 16 Lyle earned two blue ribbons in the heavy weight class Merlin took a first and second in the same class they also won three blue ribbons for cross bred ewes. Durac Nes Christian and Bruce township also won prizes in Jersey swine with first and third on junior yearling sows and a junior champion boar and grand champion junior yearling. Other locals Lauren and Allen Christian took thirds and fourths on purebred Shorthorn heifers while Mrs James Kindera placed second in crocheted rug. A round-table on exhibits followed with talks on white sauce fruit storage cake frostings cocoa and refreshments by Shirley Hild and Blaine Stahnke. Eleven girls answered roll call and a pot luck supper was planned for Sept 2 at Mrs Russell Arthur’s home. Report by Beatrice Ballhem. Green Hornets Beat Red Devils In Old Timers Game

In La Porte City old timers game the Green Hornets from the West beat the Red Devils from the East 24 to 17 in a seven inning contest. Key hitters included Ray Unowres for the Green Hornets with five hits and Jim Terrell on the West side with three solid hits. Money from fans, players and umpires will aid local baseball park improvements or equipment.

Funeral Services Held Friday For Mrs. Huppert

Mrs Rosa Huppert died Monday at Vinton hospital. Funeral conducted at local Methodist church by Rev Park Anderson with music by Cliff Burr and wife. Wed: Joann Davis and Robert Grove United in Church Ceremony

Miss Joann Davis daughter of Mr and Mrs Shannon Davis La Porte City and Robert J Grave son of Mr and Mrs Lee Grove Waterloo were married Saturday evening at 7:30 in a candlelight ceremony at Evangelical United Brethren Church. Rev M E Shank officiated. One hundred guests attended as Shirley Ashley sang Always and The Lord's Prayer. The bride wore a white silk shantung street length dress with green accessories and a red rose corsage. The groom wore a light suit and brown accessories.

Auxiliary Gets Award From State

The local American Legion Auxiliary won the meritorious award from the state department for outstanding work during the past year. Unit president Mrs. Don Kearns and county president Mrs. Cordray led a 100 percent citation with 180 points for membership gains, an Americanism program, a strong poppy drive, and other projects.
