Last rites were held Friday at 2 pm in the La Porte City Methodist church for Mrs Fred Sheffler who died Tuesday at her Mt Auburn area home. Rev W Eggleston led the service with pallbearers John Darland Al Wiese James Hull Ralph Garner Fd Guynn and Edward Kuekebusch. Mrs Leland Ashley of La Porte City sang In the Garden and Nearer My God to Thee. Burial followed at West View cemetery in La Porte City.

Canning Co Begins 1949 Pack Tuesday
Minnesota Valley Canning Co started its 1948 corn canning run Tuesday morning with 120 workers. Some fields began a week earlier. about 1250 acres are out this year in the vicinity. Fifty Bahama men help in the fields, living in barracks on the plant grounds. Corn canned at the La Forte City plant is processed as cream style.

Band to Play at Jiggs Day in Three Shows Next Tuesday
La Porte City concert band under Harlan Rice will perform in the Jiggs Day parade and give two concerts at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wednesday evening concert is canceled. the regular concert resumes Wednesday, August 17, as the final summer performance.

Geneseo Consolidated school will open the 1949-1950 year Monday August 29 with a half day first session.
