1884 Harper's Young People illustrated weekly advertises 11 pages for youths aged six to sixteen. Volume V begins November 66 1883 with annual and single issue pricing, specimen copy offered on receipt of three coins.
The advertisement extols Harper's Bazar as a brilliant and useful household journal. It calls it the arbiter of fashion with new fashion plates pattern sheets and economic tips. It highlights high quality illustrations needlework literature and humor plus promised novelties for 1884.
Harper's Weekly presents its unpartisan stance and aims to entertain and instruct American readers. It highlights illustrations serials sketches and poems by leading artists and authors to remain the popular family newspaper.
Harper & Brothers announce per year prices for Harper's Weekly Magazine and Young People plus Franklin Square Library. offers include free postage in the U S and Canada, annual volumes for 700 each with mail or express delivery, cloth cases at 1 00 postpaid, and payment by money order or draft.
The December issue opens Harper's sixty-eighth volume proclaiming its popularity in America and England. It promises illustrated features on current social and industrial topics, and celebrates high standards in literature art and mechanics with new serials by William Black and L P Roe plus contributions from Howells Reade Boughton Miller Farnham Dielman and others.

A grocer mistook tar for molasses and sold it to an old farmer. After no complaint, the grocer sent a note. The farmer replied humorously that the tar is already used up and quips his wife is “pregédist” as the situation goes sour.
Advertisement urges persons with lung or throat diseases to avoid the sea shore as air is poisonous and claims Dr Bigelow’s Positive Cure can speedily thoroughly and permanently heal throat lungs and bronchial tubes. Free trial bottles offered by W H Mahan.
Eva Burton, a 23 year old saleswoman at Herschell Shields & Co, carries a tiny 22 caliber pistol to feel safe on late night walks. Cousin Jack Bascom jokes about the weapon until he is accidentally shot in the arm by Eva when a dark street encounter leads to a dramatic, comic misfire. Eva learns the gun is not a remedy for danger and Jack recovers as the family reels from the incident.
Eva and Jack face guilt and longing after Jack is wounded. Eva fears she harmed him as she contemplates returning home. Jack asks to come for her and make a home together, expressing hope and devotion as they share a tender moment.
The piece argues against revived sectionalism postwar and warns the 1884 campaign would use the Danville riot to press a Southern outrage theme. It emphasizes unity and economic interests binding North and South, calling for business stability over partisan polarization. It also includes brief notes on poultry breeds and a quip about money and art.
