Boy operator of Civil War to receive reward
William E. Ketties, who as a boy telegrapher received the message announcing the fall of Richmond, died at 72 in Charlestown, Boston. He manned a wire at the war department on April 3 1865 when Fortress Monroe’s operator relayed the Richmond cut in message to Secretary Stanton confirming Richmond’s fall. The lad was celebrated as the one who delivered the news to Stanton. He had kept at the key until about a year ago.
