Dispatches from Vienna to Budapest travel a jagged path amid Karl’s attempt to reclaim the Hungarian throne. Reports claimed Horthy held out or capitulated while rumors of assassination and flight circulated, as Allied powers demand Karl’s expulsion and neighboring states threaten intervention.
Paris dispatch reports ambassadors debated expelling Karl of Hungary after he was captured. A formal note demanding his expulsion was sent and several western hemisphere locations were considered. A decision is expected Wednesday as Horthy's forces close on Budapest.
The official Hungarian agency reports Karl and 10 to 20 thousand troops attacked near Budapest, were repulsed at the gates. Earlier reports claimed Karl won and entered the city, but the latest dispatch places the battle between Budapest and Budaneden.
Vienna reports unconfirmed claim that the ex-emperor has been killed and his troops surrounded. The Karlist force pressed an attack as Horthy loyalists resisted and 120 prisoners were said captured. A truce was said to be sought to halt bloodshed amid entente demands to arrest and expel the ex-emperor.
London reports Premier Lloyd George told the Commons the allies will strenuously oppose restoring ex-kaiser Karl to the throne. He said the Hungarians have promised to expel bias.
United Mine Workers leader Frank P. Walsh accuses United States Steel Corporation and J P Morgan & Co of orchestrating conspiracy and murder in West Virginia s Mingo coal war during a senate inquiry. He cites the Welsh killing of H B Hatfield s husband as proof. Operators lawyer calls charges unfounded. Murray says only industrial justice can bring peace. Senate panel to hear plans from six miners and six operators.
The Mt Olympus Independents announce a new basketball team for the 1921 22 season. They claim to be among the strongest independent squads in the region and invite all Pocket teams to challenge them. For games contact Alexander Phillips Route 1 Hazleton.
Mabel Harvey and Nora Walker Jones faced circuit court Monday for contributing to delinquency. They waived arraignment and entered not guilty pleas through attorney Oscar Lanphar. Lawrence Rea Jones has not yet been arraigned in these cases. AML defendants were arrested by Sheriff Flowers after a story by 14 year old Mattie Russell prompted an investigation.

The Buick stolen from M. L. Bottom last Tuesday morning was found by thieves after partial wreckage. Bowling Green police reported the recovered car to Hoosier Mutual Automobile Insurance, which said the front was abandoned near Bowling Green. Insurance officers will retrieve the vehicle, condition details unclear. Likely the robbers fled toward the east or southwest, avoiding larger cities.
An all day Forward Movement Program meeting will be held by the Methodist church with morning and afternoon sessions at the First M E church and a night session at Memorial M E. Visitors from Evansville and ministers from Gibson County and southern Indiana will participate. Speakers include Dr A E Craig Evansville, President A F Hughes Evansville College and Dr Willis S Rowe New York. The Warning session starts 10 30, afternoon 1 30, and evening 7 30.
Mrs Ellen McCullough learns of the death of her brother in law Thom as Renisy at his Goodland Indiana home. Surviving relatives include Mrs Henry Mallan Mrs Sarah Brown Willie McCullough Robert McCullough Joe and Pred McCullough and Burl McCullough. Funeral arrangements are not yet set.
All former service men are invited to attend the American Legion meeting tonight to discuss plans for attending the national Legion meeting in Kansas City next month. Delegates’ reports from the state meeting at Wabash last week will be heard. Members are urged to be present and a special train is being considered if feasible.
Burglars blew the safe at Blue Front grocery in Rockport at corner of Puth and Main Streets using nitroglycerin. The smash yielded between 200 and 500 dollars. the theft was not noticed until about 9 AM as neighbors heard a vehicle depart and two explosions were reported. Police expect to capture suspects by noon Monday.
William Wahl sues for 500 dollars claiming damages to his car and personal injuries from an automobile crash on the Poseyville New Harmony road on Sept 30. The defendant’s truck driven by Levi Grigsby allegedly collided with Wahl on the left side at 30 mph. James Kilroy is attorney for the plaintiff. Richey J Summers vs John W Harmon to quiet title in Gibson County real estate. Embree & Embree represent the plaintiffs.
Northern Indiana fears a general railroad strike could disrupt transport and leave towns short of coal and fuel. Retail dealers have slashed orders amid expectations of price cuts, risking shortages in South Bend Elkhart Goshen and surrounding areas.
Miss Blanche Merry, state attendance officer, announced at the Indiana State Conference of Charities and Correction that Indiana schools show nearly perfect attendance. About 160 attendance officers work to keep up the record, though southern areas report illiteracy and neglect in starting school and children forced to stay home to help families or care for the sick.
Mr and Mrs J C Boyles depart Baldwin Heights after visiting Fred Boyles and family. They travel today to their home in Flint Michigan.
Mrs. Mary Lomax and her granddaughter Miss Zelia Lomax returned to their Paoli Indiana home today following a visit with Mrs. Lomax’s daughter Mrs. James Hobson and family.
Mrs. Lillian Wortham of Evansville paid a $5 fine and costs after pleading guilty to swearing falsely on a marriage application. Herman Ioster and Celia Berendes wed in Dransville and returned to Evansville, where Wortham’s son-in-law calmed, the father’s anger cooled, and all parties left satisfied after the groom paid the penalty. The incident began when the father, noting the bride was underage, reported the marriage and had suspects jailed briefly.
A Maxwell roadster with a dry gas tank and multiple damage items was found Sunday night near the Southern railroad edge of the city by Policeman Clyde West and towed to the rear city building. It is missing one tire two license plates and the registration certificate. The left front ring shows wear and the vehicle appears driven for several days. The top and back are slashed and weathered and the odometer reads 9881 miles. A size 13 stiff collar is also inside the roadster.
The first Dennis lyceum course will be held at Princeton High School tonight at eight. Potter craftsman Smith-Damon will present an interesting program. Despite pledged support short of the goal the school will proceed, relying on local backing. Mr Damon spoke to students this morning and announced plans to make six or seven pottery pieces on stage.
The United States railroad labor board announced there is reason to believe the national strike can be avoided. Both unions and strike breakers are seen working side by side on Texas road as government plans to halt any strike continue. The board urged public calm and cautioned against loose talk ahead of the next Wednesday conference.
In Houston on October 24 the only switch engine in the I N G focal yards ran with a union fireman and engineer aboard while strike breakers manned the rest of the switching crew. Two armed guards stood on the engine and fifty guards patrolled the yards as crews operated with neutral positions.
Attorney General Daugherty said a federal injunction could be used to block a rail union strike by freezing its funds. He is organizing the Justice Department for emergencies and conferred with the president at the White House. District attorneys from Indianapolis New York Buffalo Chicago and Cleveland will gather to get instructions if workers walk out.
Washington reports that 24 high officials of the American Federation of Labor oppose a rail strike now. Federation leaders aim to discourage strike sympathy, arguing the action could erode wartime gains and fail to yield lasting results, with President Samuel Gompers among the cited leaders.
Catherine Winak sues to invalidate the will of William Hughes deceased. The case, heard before a Gibson County circuit court jury, seeks to divide an estate valued around 26,000 dollars after a will allegedly favored one son and a daughter. Attorneys Robinson & Stillwell of Evansville and Morton C. Embree of Evansville represent the plaintiff. Henry Kister, McGinness, Evanson, and Johnson of Pana represent the defendants.
Hubert Morton was fined five dollars and costs in city court for drunkenness. He was arrested Saturday night after causing a disturbance in the northwest part of the city.
