The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered five Galveston area railroads to unload 2700 grain cars and restore service. The notice warns shippers to load promptly and unload costs fall on shipment owners. Railroads say car holdovers worsen terminal congestion.
The St. Joseph schools annual commencement was held Friday night at the park auditorium on South Race Street. The hall was crowded with standing room only as a strong program of recitations and music pleased the audience.

Paris marks Memorial day as France honors 70 000 American doughboys buried on its soil. Marshall Petain leads ceremonies with French troops joining U S forces across multiple sites. Relatives of the fallen travel from abroad to pay their respects amid nationwide mourning.
The Indiana state highway surveyors working in Gibson county are off for the automobile races at Indianapolis. The Dixie Bee survey party joining them includes Chief Surveyor C. A. Fulton Ulery Dorman E. L. Faust Ray E. Smith and Ivan Overman.
Mr and Mrs J H Ashmead and daughter Katherine left Saturday morning in a new Buick touring car with a large box on the running board. They will spend ten days in Terre Haute before journeying west to California or Colorado to select a future home. The car carries tourist equipment and the family outfits for extended auto travel. Friends envy their plans yet wish them a prosperous new life.
Indianapolis Appellate Court upholds Judge Van Deveer’s ruling in Francis E Pulley vs Walker Hospital Evansville. Jury trial occurred after Vanderburgh venue change over claim a gauze left in leg incision during operation. Damages sought totaled 3 000 dollars in the Gibson Circuit case.
In Washington on May 23 supporters of soldier relief legislation opened a filibuster in the House, delaying the day’s journal reading after the speaker’s gavels fell. The action was renewed and lawmakers moved to block other business until the relief measure is brought to the floor.
Washington May 29. The House fell short by twenty nine votes of the two thirds needed to pass the Knox resolution to end the war with Germany and Austria despite Republicans and some Democrats supporting an override. The final tally 220 to 152 with 17 Democrats backing the override and two Republicans siding with Democrats to sustain the veto.
Center township held its first community meeting with over 125 attendees including farmers and residents. John Meade will lead a June 17 session on Marketing the Farm Products. Attorney L. C. Embree spoke on taxation and public officer power. Miss Estella Harman formed a new women’s club, Twenty charter members joined. The Women’s Club will first meet June 8 at Mrs. W. E. F. Chappelle’s home in Francisco. Luncheon served by Baptist church ladies. County Agent Mood urged unity for progress.
Dr. Melvin E Haggerty an Indiana University graduate has been elected dean of the college of education at the University of Minnesota with a 6000 dollar annual salary. He will assume July 1 and succeeds to the presidency held by Dr. Coffman. He earned A B from Indiana in 1902 and A M in 1907 and Ph D from Harvard. He joined Minnesota in 1919 as professor of educational psychology.
Southside baseball hosts Ft. Branch Sunday at the Southside park at 2 30 PM. Monday the team meets Haubstadt at the same park at 3 30 PM to avoid overlapping Memorial Day events. Local fans expected in strong numbers. Ft Branch praised as fast, Haubstadt as a close rival.
The Princeton post American Legion received sixteen Springfield 1908 rifles from Adjt. Gen. Harry B. Smith of Indianapolis. Post Quarter master Joe Vollmer will issue the rifles for Memorial Day exercises. Two firing squads meet at Vollmer's store Sunday at 9 AM for preliminary arrangements.
Post Commander R. H. Munford announced that local American Legion members taking part in Decoration Day exercises may wear overseas caps due to a scarcity of campaign hats. It was unclear if members had overseas experience or prior issuance. Legionaries will assemble at the public library at 1 o clock Monday afternoon.
Judge W C Robinson of Colorado Springs and his Evansville-born brother Judge W C Robinson spent Saturday in Owensville visiting relatives and friends. The pair greeted many locals during the day.
Officers from Purdue University’s military department will play key roles at the ROTC field artillery camp at Camp Knox from mid June to late July. Captain R G Kirkwood will lead Battery A with Captain H C Mahin as second in command. About forty to fifty Purdue students are slated to attend, with Maj F W Bryant directing motor equipment and Maj E B Byers slated for physical training before his China agricultural work.
The Woman's Relief Corp will meet tomorrow at 2 30 PM in the United Presbyterian Church to prepare for the Memorial service. Also for sale a 1916 Buick touring car listed at $500. 984 Seminary Indpt 2387 20M3rd.
Southside teams host Ft Branch Sunday at 2 30 p m and Haubstadt Monday at 3 30 p m both games at the southside pall park to avoid Memorial Day events.
Memorial Day ceremonies unite Grand Army of the Republic with Spanish American and World War groups. Graves decorated at outlaying cemeteries and a parade from the library to Odd Fellows and Warnock cemeteries leads to a 3 p.m. service at United Presbyterian Church with Rev. E Smith. Choir members urged to attend and bring songbooks.
Mrs Florence Rayburn is visiting her grandparents Mr and Mrs Amy Rayburn in Evansville as reported in the early edition notice. The Democrat will be issued before noon Monday with all items due by 8 oclock Monday morning.
