George Reed, 1 percent employee at the Andrew Carey Dairy Farm west of the city, left with $25 from a vase Sunday. Reed, who arrived two weeks ago from Louisville, departed early Monday before milking. Police alerted and towns notified to locate Reed and recover the money.
The Grand Army of the Republic formed in Decatur Illinois on April 6 1866 led by Dr B F Stephenson and Chaplain W J Rutledge of the 14th Illinois Infantry. The first national encampment occurred November 20 1886 and by 1916 the order had 5452 posts and 159863 members. Memorial Day owes its establishment to G A R efforts.
President Wilson signed the civil service retirement bill into law, providing retirement and pensioning for government employees. The action was announced from Washington on May 24 by United Press.
United Press reports the murder president Venustiano Carranza is brought by a broken train to Mexico City. About 50 onlookers, including family and Carranza loyalists, witness the arrival as soldiers carry the crude casket to the city. Carranza’s daughters say he wished to be buried in the capital or in the birth place with the poor.
The city pledges to curb speeding to keep streets safe for children. Chief Guthrie announced stop watches will be used to measure driving speeds and a table showing time per block will be created, aiming to secure enforceable evidence.

Paris May 24 Deschanel president of France suffered a bad bruise and minor injuries after falling from a moving train near Fountain Bleau or Fountain Bleu after an influenza bout. He had closed windows due to illness and slipped when a sudden lurch occurred while he attempted to open a window.
Frank Hitchcock testified as the first witness for the senate sub committee on campaign expenditures. He said he knew nothing about Leonard Wood's campaign fund and noted $15,000 sent to New Jersey was the largest amount in any state with Maryland at $12,000 and many states under $10,000 or nothing.
James H Guthrin Chief of Police issues a final warning strict enforcement of speed limits cut outs lights and quiet zone rules in Princeton. He notes ten mph in business district and fifteen mph in residences plus two front and one rear light requirements. Police will arrest and press cases in city court if laws are ignored.
Mrs. Clarence Reas, married three weeks, died in New Albany after a Saturday evening accident. She was found by her husband in the barber shop front of the house with a revolver discharged under a pillow. The bullet struck two inches below the heart.
A mob of about 1,000 surrounded Alexandria jail seeking the surrender of William Turner the black assailant who attacked Pearl Clark and killed her escort T Morgan Moore Moore a torpedo plant worker in Alexandria was shot by the assailant after stopping his car to help Clark motor motorists heard her screams and pursued the attacker who fled and was later captured.
At a Washington hearing the Interstate Commerce Commission was told national railroads earned only one percent on property investment last year. Chairman Elliott said new freight rates must yield six percent, with increases of about 27.85 percent needed to reach that target. Current proposals mirror present operating costs, not labor wage increases.
The Southwestern Indiana Historical Society invites the public to an open meeting at the Assembly Room of the Public Library in Princeton on Tuesday afternoon May 25 1920 at 215 pm. Dr Logan Esary of Bloomington will speak and members may join the society during the event.

Relatives report the death of Samuel John Carithers at 6:30 Sunday evening at his Newcastle home after an appendectomy last week. He leaves wife Nora Ford and daughter Dorothy Ford, parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Carithers, and several siblings, with services pending. Born May 18, 1891, he lived on the Carithers farm before moving to Newcastle in 1919. He was a United Presbyterian church member.

Enevey Hendricks age 25 of Vincennes died Sunday afternoon of kidney trouble at 3 30. Remains were sent through this city today toward Velpen for burial at his old home. He is survived by his parents and three sisters including Mrs Steffy of Vincennes.
