Reports from Washington on May 23 described sensational rumors of Huerta's collapse in Mexico City and a rebel uprising. No official information was available as orders silenced officials and news from correspondents in Mexico City came through indirect channels.
In Columbus Ohio on May 23 officials forecast that about forty five thousand coal miners idle since April 1 will resume work within three weeks. The move follows renewed negotiations and a possible settlement to end the long stoppage affecting mines across the region.
A temporary stand at Evansville public school Field Day collapsed during a butterfly dance injuring 42 people among 300 spectators. Rev. A M Couchman suffered a broken leg. authorities investigate lack of side bracing as the cause. Mayor Bosse and Commissioner Harvey Herndon led the response as crowds watched at the crowded ball park.
A Centennial celebration schedules events at Public Square and Place 209 Broadway with Tri Kappas and United States Department of Agriculture sponsoring exhibits. Activities include a 2 pm concert, 10 am band, 11 am farm exhibit, knife throwing at 3 pm, live acts, a sensational slide for life, and Dare Devil Henry Hart Bros. National Shows in the evening.
Viagara Falls Ontario May 25 Indications of real progress emerged as the first full conference of mediation talks was announced for 5 o clock tonight. Mexican delegates conferred with mediators and Justice Lamar and Frederick W Lehman met with the A B C ambassadors to discuss a base of meat for the conference.
Mayor D R Head calls on all residents to observe May 25 as a special Clean-up Day. The city will cut grass and trim weeds, remove rubbish, and improve cleanliness for visitors during the Centennial celebration. City forces will assist, and decorations are encouraged during Centennial week.
A car carrying T. M. McDonald and family ran off a hill road east of Patoka near Leslie Duncan farm. The top of the car prevented serious injury as the vehicle flipped, landing wrong side up. five occupants escaped with only minor bruises. Mrs. McDonald drove the machine and a steering wrenching bump caused the loss of control.
Charles Becker again convicted of murder in the Rosenthal case and faces the electric chair. He refused to wait for Friday’s sentence and begins preparing for a higher court appeal. The May 22 verdict found Becker as the arch conspirator, with twelve jurors affirming the gunmen as his agents.
American vice consul John R. Silliman, held by federals at Saltillo for over two weeks, arrived in Mexico City in good health. He reported his disappearance to Washington, and Huerta officials promised to clarify the case. Silliman sebelumnya connected with President Wilson, and his return follows U S pressure for his release.
