A mob in Memphis, Tennessee burned Eli Pearson at a stake after abducting him from Holly Springs. Witnesses report ears cut and fingers torn as Pearson allegedly confessed to killing a schoolgirl. Authorities pursued two other suspects. a plan for a second lynching emerged amid public cheers. A chauffeur tore up a U S flag and urged Germans before federal intervention. hundreds of women present.
The Mongolia incident killed two nurses and the St Louis voyage carried shells deemed misfit. Admiral Earle reported shells from the Spanish American War era were used aboard armed ships but not tampered with. An official probe reviews whether faulty ammunition supplied the government and if malicious tampering occurred.
German government granted passports to most delegates from both major socialist groups for the Stockholm Conference in Stockholm. Adolph Hoffman of the radical faction had his departure refused due to his role in general strike agitation, signaling selective permission and possible plotting flexibility.

Washington May 22 Mexican Ambassador Bomillas said Mexico would face national death by its own action if it considered allying with any European power against the United States He said Mexican ports would stay open to all belligerents and that copper oil and metals would be produced in large quantities and made available to all buyers
Cincinnati May 22 Judge Hol- Mater today dismissed 97 indictments charging politicians with buying or selling votes in the last election. He ruled there are no statutes providing punishment for bribery in elections and noted Congress left the matter to the states.
The Sexton garment factory started operations Monday with seven workers under Fairfield experts. Five more were added today and a new crew will join Wednesday. The plant plans to employ over 150 women and girls as full production ramps up with government contracts. cutting and sewing will occur at Princeton, with training delaying immediate full capacity.
Representatives of all Gibson county banks will convene in the small court room tonight to discuss allotment and sale of Liberty Loan bonds. Gibson banks have been allotted 226 000 and aim to place the funds quickly to support the war effort. Chairman Frank Harris of Farmers National Bank calls the meeting and urges patriotic support as investors are urged to back the Liberty Loan through timely purchases.
The Princeton high school class heard Rev. L. T. Freeland of First M. E. Church deliver the annual baccalaureate sermon titled We Have Found the Messiah. A large audience attended as the church choir provided music including two anthems and a solo by Mrs. George Mossman. Rev. Peddicord read scripture, Rev. Watson offered prayer, and Rev. Z. T. Connaway gave benediction.
