The principal of Princeton High School resigns to accept the principalship of the Columbia School of 1,000 students in Evansville, bringing changes to local education leadership and signaling a major appointment for the Evansville district.
Reneer, operator of the big wheel press in the machine shop, suffered severe mangling of the first and second fingers of his right hand and painful bruising to the back of his hand in an accident Thursday morning. A local physician dressed the injury.
Six masked bank robbers attacked the People Savings Bank in Delta this morning, wounding baker James Warner and slugging assistant cashier Mark Caster. They escaped with about $12,000 in cash and Liberty bonds, heading toward Toledo while other employees were confined in a back room.
Unease among juniors sophomores and freshmen as students await word on exam exemptions. Seniors already know. May 21 to May 28 feature a junior reception baccalaureate sermon Lincoln High School and commencement events with speakers including Prof. George H. Tapy and Prof. A T Long.
Martha Palmer nine, daughter of Mr and Mrs Julian Palmer of east Spring street Patoka, was injured Thursday morning when an auto driven by Raymond Dill struck near Main and Spring. She suffered bruises and a deep gash near the collar bone while two other children in the crowd received minor injuries. The car slid along rails on an electric line causing a sudden swerve. Dill paid the doctor bill and expressed regret, stating the accident was unavoidable and no blame rested on him.
The East Broadway garage owned by W. J. Lowe is being upgraded with steel supports to remove wooden posts, easing auto movement. Additional interior improvements are planned.
Indianapolis May 21 John W McCradle of the public service commission telegraphed the interstate commerce commission requesting a priority coal ruling for Indiana He said the coal shortage in Indiana was becoming acute and asked Senator Watson to use his influence to secure the order.
The Interstate Commerce Commission will release 125 million dollars of the 300 million rehabilitation fund to buy railroad rolling stock. It includes 100 000 freight cars and 2 000 locomotives, with government aiding railroads to raise the remaining 75 percent via a national equipment corporation and car trust.
Christine Warnock Holmes died Friday at 4 40 at Methodist hospital. She leaves husband Hilary Herbert Holmes and three children Anna Gertrude Hilary Herbert and Mary Lucinda, with her parents Mr. and Mrs James Warnock and sister Mrs Gertrude Humphrey. Funeral Sunday 8 PM United Presbyterian church, Rev Morris Watson. interment War nick cemetery. Born February 2 1889 in Princeton she taught music and German at Princeton High School and later supervised music in city schools. She married June 3 1915 in Dalphine Alabama. County Health Commissioner Arthur of Patoka was in the city.
May evening weather notes show high of 77 and low of 68 with 52 percent precipitation. A year ago, May had 52 high and 44 low with 43 percent precipitation. Miss Esther Lindsay visited Evansville today.
White river bottom landowners from Morgan to Gibson counties gathered in Washington on May 21 to discuss a possible straightening project from the river mouth to Worthington or Indianapolis. More than 250 attended, with Daviess county leading representation and Knox county close behind. The meeting favored the improvement with county delegations arranging plans to push toward a conclusion and William Henley named chairman of the Gibson county group.
Mrs. Ida Crawley, principal of Lowell west school, announced the Eight A grade will leave a splendid new piano as a memorial. The act serves as incentive and will make the memory of the departing class linger longer than anything they could have left.
Evansville Ind May 21 Chas J Murphy of Brookton was named treasurer of the Democratic state central committee by chairman Benjamin Bosse Murphy former member of the public service commission under Governor Ralston and ally of Thomas Taggart Bosse will name the secretary later before the national convention Sixty rooms were set aside at the Manchester in San Francisco for the Democratic headquarters Mrs Gertrude McHugh of Indianapolis named secretary and to depart for the west to organize the state women’s delegation.
David L. Depreist sues Mary Depriest in Gibson Circuit Court for divorce charging she smokes cigarettes uses profane language deserted him and associates with other men. Other recent suits include Willis Reel versus Pearl Reel for cruel treatment and custody and Francis Marion White versus Maud White for refusal to cohabit.
The House approved the Knox peace resolution by 228 to 139 and sent it to President Wilson after Senate passage. Democrats hissed as Illinois Republican Mason argued the president oversteps by keeping troops in Germany, while 19 Democrats backed the measure and two Republicans opposed.
William Micheal left the city along with the crippled Hugh Meserole whose savings of about $9 vanished when Micheal disappeared after a hospital stay for an amputated leg. Chief Guthrie questioned the motive and noted Micheal’s drug habit may drive the disappearance. No theft charges arise.
Otto A. Beyer of South Bend is named grand master and George A. Hershman of Crown Point is named deputy grand master at the eighty fourth Indiana I O O F convention. With no opposition both will be elected in November. H A Winterrowd of Indianapolis and Will Ehrhardt of Greensburg were chosen to the Sovereign Grand Lodge seats for one and two years respectively. John B. Cockrum of Indianapolis was named grand trustee and Dr. Jacob Goldman of Hammond appointed historian.
Jarvis Barber 15 son of Mr and Mrs Ed Barber of South Gibson street was knocked from his bicycle Thursday morning at the southeast corner of the public square when struck by an automobile driven by J M McCormick. He sustained painful bruises but no bones were broken and the wheels did not pass over him.
In Indianapolis on May 21 the Democratic state convention endorsed equal voting rights for women, honored service members on the ticket, supported President Wilson and Versailles, and launched Vice President Marshall's presidential bid. Dr. Carleton B. McCulloch was nominated for governor by acclamation, with scant contest for state treasurer and a clear lead for Deharity over Handley.
