A street car tale from Princeton has three men debating prices and labor as woolens rise. They ask the conductor about a One Price Clothing Store and learn the name ALVA LEVI, noting the conductor’s sharp tie and status.
The president calls Congress to repeal or amend current alcohol regulations and pledges railway reforms by the end of the fiscal year. He also urges passage of broad labor laws affecting workers nationwide.
Congressional discussions focus on repealing wartime liquor controls for wine and beer, creating a federal advisory agency, preserving the U S employment service, advancing land-for-soldiers bills, boosting foreign trade, revising taxes on incomes and profits, protecting domestic dye industries, repealing the luxury tax, approving a suffrage amendment, and reorganizing electrical and railroad infrastructure under centralized oversight.
President Wilson sent to Congress a message urging repeal or amendment of the wartime ban on beers and wines, stressing labor problems and the return of railroads and wire lines to owners. He calls for voluntary cooperation between labor and capital and hints at consolidation of railroads into large systems. He also weighs protection for the American dye industry and warns against broad tariff changes.
All persons in partnerships including farmers and merchants must file partnership returns with the Collector of Internal Revenue in their district by June 15 1919. Penalties for delinquency. Blank forms mailed to partnerships of record in the Seventh Indiana District Terre Haute but lists not complete and forms sent to every bank in the district.
A large crowd is expected at an eight o clock mass meeting at the court house. Women speakers Wilde and Feldthouse will discuss complaints and anonymous letters received by the committee. The city is divided into four sections with a long list of ladies serving on regional committees.
TheState v. Andy Waldensen colored charged with disturbance of the peace was heard this afternoon in the city building before Justice Braselton. The complaining witness is Joe Parks.
Society notes report the Cosmos club will hold Thursday afternoon meetings with Mrs. O. M. Kolb Mrs. M. P. Hollngsworth and Mrs. Vet Strain at the Hotel Kidd. City grade teachers host a six o'clock dinner for the superintendent and school board at the High school this evening.
City chairman W. E. Criswell lists team captains and members for Thursday’s Salvation Army Home Service Fund drive. Volunteers cover territories around Broadway Mulberry Main Prince with 18 teams named, plus Elks meeting instructions and officer installation details.
News comes from London and Washington as Hawker and Sopwith plane are missing after a transatlantic attempt. Admiralty and air ministry report no word yet. NC-1 reaches Punta Del Gada, speed averaging 95 mph on a 150 mile leg. NC-3 suffers wing damage from heavy seas and a five hour rain season.
In St Johns Newfoundland government and Sopwith officials report no news of aviator Hawker and Commander Grieve after their Sopwith biplane attempt to cross the Atlantic. Wireless calls failed to locate the aircraft and no ship reported sighting them. London meanwhile notes another night without word from the British aviators who departed Sunday.
The Princeton city council discussed opening a summer market run by local gardeners. John Berry bid 14 percent per square foot for sidewalks, M S Metzger 16 percent. Berry's bid was accepted. Maxam Gardens asked to use streets near Welborn lot for selling produce. plan aims to line up gardeners and, if successful, rent stalls next year to producers. Peddler licenses proposed to protect producers. Market hoped to start around June 15 or 20 and run at least three months.
Paris May 20 Nine members of the American peace commission offered resignations citing dissatisfaction with the German treaty. Three resignations are final while six others may remain in service. names of six have not been disclosed pending further consideration.
Lawrence Mahan son of Mrs A J Mahan east of the city arrived home this morning from overseas service with the 115th Base Hospital corps.
