The advertisement lists May sales of 50,000 yards of staple cotton goods including 500 yards valued at $2.00 and table linens in 72 inch width with 10 patterns. Full bleached linen scarce at $1.45 per yard.
The War Department announces one day only for draft registration. All males in designated ages must register on that day. Absentees should register by mail or via local clerks. registrars cannot excuse anyone from registration. Sick individuals may send a representative to the county or city clerk on the sixth day after the proclamation.
The Senate voted 77 to 6 to pass the administration espionage bill, granting the president power to embargo exports for public welfare and authorizing mail censorship, penalizing espionage, and expanding warrants. The press censorship provision was eliminated 48 to 34, while wartime prohibitions on alcohol during cereal production were upheld 47 to 37.
The Tourist Club will meet Wednesday afternoon with Mrs. Thomas R Paxton at her home on North Main Street.
Lieutenant Fisher plans to cap Company M enlistment at 150 unless conscription acts, with 98 men enrolled and two slots left. Potential recruits include Della Martin Hartwell Herscheil George Fitch Ernest May Eugene Lutz and Otto C Zitlak, plus others accepted recently.
Petrograd May 15. With free Russia crumbling the soldiers and workers delegates reconsider last week’s vote rejecting a coalition government. A 23 to 22 deadlock prompts an all delegation meeting tonight to decide again. Milakoff sails to the front to urge unity and firm home administration. A new commission will negotiate on foreign policy, peace, national self determination, and army democratization to strengthen Russia at the front.
Mrs Joseph McCullough who has been seriously ill in a St Louis hospital for two weeks while traveling with her family has been taken home to recover. She is with her parents Mr and Mrs John Chism at 701 South Gibson Street and many friends regret her illness.
London May 15 German forces launched counterattacks on both British and French lines, repelled with loss of ground. Haig reported bombardment of the Hindenburg line and French forces faced heavy pressure near La Bouvelle. US observers believe a major offensive on the western front is planned, with Germany trimming the eastern line and shifting troops abroad.
Conferees insert a clause authorizing but not directing the president to raise a volunteer force led likely by Col Roosevelt. Wilson presses Congress to speed war measures, while army chiefs oppose action until selective service proceeds. Prohibition fights resume with attempts to add a prohibition clause to food control or push separate bills. An emergency fund of 400 million dollars is authorized for ship construction and purchases to aid Allies, with total emergency outlay near 3.5 billion dollars.
Paris on May 15 reported General Petain appointed generalissimo commanding the French armies and field forces with General Foch named to succeed him. General Nivelle remains in command of certain army groups and Petain becomes chief of staff.
Almost the entire 5200 quota at Fort Benjamin Harrison prepared to begin a three month officers training course at 5 30 tomorrow. Col Edward F Glenn said 4238 more applications approved may enter if others drop out. Barracks were ordered to accommodate three regiments and related corps.
Ira V. Rothrock of Mt. Vernon Indiana will leave soon with the Fourth Indiana infantry to the front as a sergeant in the medical department. He is visiting his brother R B Rothrock, clerk of Martin's drug store, and Ar S Rothrock of Princeton was visiting his son and family. Mt Carmel Republican.
