Despite German declarations that peace terms are impossible Paris councils express optimism that when negotiations begin the Germans will sign the document.
Berlin telegram reports Chancellor Scheidemann told journalists the government will order delegates not to sign the peace terms. In Versailles the German and Austrian delegates plan a conference at St Germain tomorrow with Brockdorff-Rantzau sending a note via courier to the Austrian side for permission for three German delegates to meet.
Paris May 13 German delegates prepare a still note on peace terms to be sent to the French foreign office before night. The Big Four replied to Germany demanding negotiation and league access, referring them to league rules and urging immediate release of prisoners after treaty signing.
Berlin May 13. Chancellor Scheidemann said the peace is not acceptable in a speech before the national assembly. He argued for a peace Germany can fulfill, free from brutal militarism, and criticized Wilson's terms as not salvageable. He cited indemnities and loss of territories as beyond Germany's ability to pay and predicted Germany will accept the terms at showdown despite opposition.
Gibson county commissioners relieved contractors Dozier Dunkle Lane Kinman Owens Son and S R Adams Co from road contracts delayed by the war after examining each agreement. New contracts will be let for completion of the roads including Nos 1 2 3 and 4 in Washington township Nos Wirth in Patuka Arbuthnot in Center and Joseph Emerson Sylvester Marshal in Montgomery townships.
County auditor reports multiple rock road petitions to the commissioners. Planned projects include Alex Sullivan road No. 2 in White River township and W R Montgomery road in Montgomery township, with bids for French road in Washington township let. Other petitions cover streets in Princeton and roads in Montgomery Patoka and Wabash townships as citizens push for better mobility.
Anthony Hightower pleaded guilty to assault and battery in the mayor's court this morning and received the usual fine. Rosa Hightower and James Johnson faced similar charges, pleaded not guilty, and await trial. All parties are identified as colored.
The case of the State versus Henry Shafer charged with breaking into C. and E. J. freight cars was continued today before Special Judge Smith. The Maxwell farms receivership was extended to additional Maxwell lands by court order. Receiver is attorney Harvey Harmen.
Haubstadt Indiana May 13. An attempted bank robbery failed as thieves apparently fled after entering through the outer vault doors leaving tools behind. Authorities say no inner vault work was done and only a small amount of cash was on hand. An acetylene welding outfit was later linked to the crime.
Two new personal injury actions are filed in circuit court. Walter J. Biel seeks 25 dollars from Busse Coal Co. for injuries from an April 4 mine car collision that allegedly will cripple him for life. Walter Farley sues Areshire Con Co. for 10000 dollars for the death of his son Kenneth Farley in last October’s mine accident, alleging negligence of fellow employees.
The county council and county commissioners discussed and must approve the construction of CL Wilson road in Montgomery township under the county unit dw. The action aligned with the commissioners, with session focused on the road project approval.
Belmont HL resident J C Abrenkins came to reclaim his 14 year old son who had run away. The boy was arrested by police Monday night and detained until his father reached the scene.
Thousands lined Brussels streets as Edith Cavell's body, escorted by British and Belgian troops, was honored after her 1915 execution. A gun carriage bore the casket draped in the Union Jack to Ostend, then to England for a Westminster Abbey service.

Twenty one Rotary members and wives attended the Inter City dinner of the Princeton Evansville Henderson and Owensboro clubs at the Hotel McCurdy Evansville Monday evening. T Morton McDormud Princeton club secretary spoke for Princeton and James Schermerhorn Detroit Times editor gave the principal address on The Soul of a City. The evening was enjoyed by all.
Mrs Price Alexander Crow, wife of the pastor of the First Methodist Church, sustained a second stroke Monday afternoon. She is reported slightly improved today after having rallied from a stroke several months ago, which was considered more serious than the recent event.
