United Press reports the revised bonus bill is expected to pass the House next week after approval by the Ways and Means Committee chair. Foreseeing Senate steps, officials say action will be prompt, though precise timing remains uncertain.
Scout Amnbister Garwood Riggs of Troop No 2 announced a course of lectures and a musical program to support the troop. The event aims to entertain Princeton residents and raise funds, with stricter plans for success this year.
In May ARIS reports that Norwegian astronomer Stormer measured the earth’s atmospheric belt at 350 miles, 150 times Mount Whitney’s height. He asserts the sky’s real color is black and the idea of an infinite blue is a poetical delusion.
President Wilson telegraphs Oregon Democratic leaders urging the party to campaign in favor of the Versailles treaty and against Senate Lodge reservations. He calls the reservations a violation of national honor and warns the United States must lead in free nations. A Portland message had asked if candidates should pledge to ratify without Lodge reservations.
A man who wore a blond wig corset and silk lingerie to disguise himself as a woman was chased by a watchman and police for robberies in an exclusive Chicago north side district. He claimed to be Brice Barthing from San Francisco and was held for investigation.
Joseph Cappello who resided in Evansville for years without US relatives left 8000 to the city park board for beautifying Garvin park. He also left 460 to the Cigar Makers Union and 400 to Charles Kirkpatrick, sexton of Locust Hill cemetery where Cappello rests.
Dispatches report no danger to Americans in Tampico as Captain Long notes. In El Paso observers say Obregon consolidates power with Mexico City likely under federal control and a near bloodless revolution. Nogales notes Gov De la Huerta plans to go to Mexico City to assume supreme chief duties and convene governors to name a new president.
Washington reports that Mexico City begins a period of reconstruction with rebels forming a new government. The State Department says it will deal with the new regime if Carranza is definitively overthrown.
President Wilson voiced dissatisfaction with Great Britain and the naval conduct of the war after mid 1917 in a confidential fleet address. Secretary Daniels disclosed the remarks before the Senate Naval Investigating Committee.
Dr William Allen, Indiana University student from Hartford City, leaves Bloomington to lead the centennial expedition funded by the university. He sails May 12 from New Orleans, travels via Callao and the Andes, then explores the Amazon region Maranon and Iquitos for rare fish, using nets and poisons. The trip runs through August with a return route across the Cordilleras. Also noted is Mr and Mrs Alex Norman departing Washington for San Diego to settle there.
William Dean Howells famed American writer and dean of literature died last night at his New York home at age 81 after an influenza illness. His son and daughter were by his bedside. funeral plans to be announced. Born in Martins Ferry Ohio he began as a newspaper man and became U S consul at Venice and editor of the Atlantic Monthly for sixteen years.
J Edgar Burton and FB R Lee lead a 35 truck convoy from Evansville scheduled to arrive Wednesday evening. The parade travels through Cynthiana Poseyville and other towns with local trucks joining Thursday for what organizers call the largest truck demonstration yet in the city. Claude A Smith chairs the committee with John Parrett and Ed Robinson assisting. Parrett to handle publicity.
At noon Tuesday Deputy U S Marshall Bender arrested Evansville police Chief Schwidtz and four officers in a large booze conspiracy case. Schwidtz posted 5000 bond. others posted 2500 each. Total arrests reach three. All face arraignment before Judge A B Anderson on May 17. Bonds set at 1000 for remaining defendants.
The Irving high school hosts a two day exhibit of manual training domestic science and art with samples available in the upper corridor and basement. Visitors may tour classes Thursday and Friday afternoon followed by a Friday evening program of music recitations and plays with copies of old masters on display. Principal B W Cockrun invites all city school patrons to attend.
In Hopkinsville Kentucky a fully formed chicken hatched from an egg prepared for a Christmas dinner by Mrs. Claude Johnson. The egg, sent to Miss Mollie Cason who kept it until Easter, then traveled to Mrs. R. J. Dowell in Mountain Lake, and has hatched into a healthy chick. The tale is supported by several witnesses.
A formal Ottawa announcement states the British government plans to place Canadian relations with the United States entirely in Canadian hands. Mrs Frank Ammerman and daughter Virginia Lee visited Mount Carmel to see relatives. Miss Nigil McConnell from Francisco is bound for Dodge City Kansas to visit her grandfather Charles Cochran.
Charles Arthur Stoops, nine, son of Mr and Mrs Harrison Stoops living east of the Southern shops, lost the third finger of his left hand after being run over by a truck wheel in the repair yard. Surgeons amputated at the second joint. other fingers were mashed but may be saved. The accident occurred while he and companions played on trucks used to haul material between repair tracks.
Paris dispatches report seven German Zeppelins sighted flying east over Warsaw as Polish papers say they head toward Russia with military instructors aboard.
May 11 in the House of Commons a proposed amendment by former premier Asquith to create one parliament for Ireland was defeated by 239 votes to 55 after a brief debate. The government maintained its two parliament plan for Ireland in the Irish home rule bill.
Chief Surveyor Fulton and five assistants survey the Dixie Bee in Haubstadt Warrington area heading toward Princeton. They aim to cut costs by straightening curves reducing miles and saving about 40 000 per mile and possibly another half mile saved toward Patoka with future alignment closer to a rail line.
May 11 report says leaders pressed to settle the state chairman position four at large delegates and whether to endorse Governor Goodrich. Decision on the chairman to be made by district chairmen with other issues likely to be debated on the convention floor.
In Fort Wayne Indiana May 11 Lincoln Lifes of Princeton captured top money in the five man event with a grand total of 2983 Hoosier Oil of Indianapolis finished second Local bowlers led by C Hebbie also of Indianapolis won the individual championship with 659 pins Myers of Indianapolis and Baker of Princeton each had 655 to place next.
