Amsterdam reports Chancellor Von Bethmann Hollweg postponed a peace address awaiting events. Copenhagen notes Germany faces domestic pressure for peace, with a nation wide hunt for so called peace spies and rewards for propagandists as the autocracy resists public peace talk.
Citizens on Hart Street urge repairs and object to oiling terms alleging double charges. The mayor will reply to signers as council reviews claims amid worries of malfeasance. Hart Street repairs proceed after sewer work. oiling estimate set at four and a half cents per square yard.
Ernest Stresseman argues there is no distinction between German people and leaders. He says a world war with 2,000,000 volunteers would have been impossible otherwise and cites breaches with America as English propaganda. He claims Germany’s parliament is the freest in the world and the Kaiser is more limited than the U.S. president.
May 8 dispatches report the administration will seek Congress approval for a one billion dollar appropriation to expand merchant ship construction. Navy officials state a near term solution to the submarine threat is expected as experts discuss naval operations with Secretary Daniele and the Naval Consulting Board. A separate Rome dispatch notes Kaiser Wilhelm survives an assassination attempt near Berlin. Washington also reports a $100 million loan to France as its first share in an $8 billion bend.
In Washington D C May the vast flow of applications for a multi billion dollar loan program has overwhelmed inadequate facilities for handling the clerical workload. Experts struggle to tabulate estimates as the process outpaces capacity and a large portion of the funds is routed toward Indiana.
Stores close Friday 1 to 4 36 p m to support Princeton Field Day at the fairgrounds. About 1600 students march at 11 a m headed by the High School and join a 1 30 p m program featuring grade performances, flag drills, military drills and an America song by 1600 voices. Picnic lunch follows the parade.
The Ley ton Manufacturing Co. rushes the old dock factory and installs new machinery. Supt Schramm returns from St Louis to oversee start up expected within a week. About 525 applications were received. 125 hires to start with, others added as needed. A lottery method may be used to ensure fairness in selection.
John Reese known as Reese the slayer of Mary Jones in Frinceton on March ninth was found guilty of second degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. The jury deliberated about 30 minutes after hearing limited defense evidence and no new trial motion is expected. Defense argued insanity during an extended closing by D W Duncan.
A French special train derailed near Arcola injuring no one as two 80 ton engines crossed a 70 lb rail. Government investigators in Indianapolis found the break occurred in a one foot rail section not caused by a plot. The wreck halted service for hours while the commission remained in the diner at the time.
At Gibson County Bar Association in the small court room this morning resolutions of respect for the memory of Attorney John H Miller were adopted. Judge O M Welborn gave a short address. Committees named include Resolutions L C Embree O M Welborn and A P Twineham. Honorary pallbearers J R McCoy T R Paxton T W Cullen Judge S J Vandeveer J Q A Goodman and Henry Kister. Princeton residents and organizations rally for French war relief, raising 323.11 dollars with many gifts listed. Donors include Dr. O F Howard Mrs L K Redman Jacob Stephens and more, with further subscriptions promised to surpass the initial total.
The board of county commissions awarded contracts for two road improvements. John iRheuts Road in Columbia Township goes to J. M. Kinman for 17 095 dollars, and the Thomas Foley Road in Barton Township goes to George Soller for 4 148 dollars.
