A local store reports a large spring rug sale in Princeton with twenty room size rugs sold last week and sixty more slated to sell in the next two weeks, prompting the decision to discontinue the rug department.
Mrs. Henry Garrett of Patoka was thrown from a farm wagon when frightened mules bucked on the square by West and State streets. She suffered two broken ribs and possible internal injuries, was treated at home and later returned there.
ECCLES W Va May 1 At daybreak at least seventy five blackened corpses were taken from Mine No 5 of the New River Collieries Co rescuers after bringing seven to the surface Victims of Tuesday explosion. A government mine rescue worker emerged gasping that every man in the mine is dead. He had carried a canary until gas killed it and warned others to retreat before the oxygen ran out.
A seven year old accidentally discharged a loaded .22 caliber flobert rifle, sending a steel cleaning rod through his two year old sister’s head near the left eye. The rod exited through her left shoulder blade as doctors in Union treated her. on Friday her condition showed cautious improvement and recovery chances appeared fair. The children’s parents live about three miles east of Union on the Petersburg road.
The Gibson county mass convention met in Princeton on Thursday afternoon to select candidates for county offices. A notably representative ticket was produced with James P. Roby of Wabash township highlighted for the judicial nomination. Roby, longtime township trustee, is praised for strong leadership and county influence.
Fire department answered a Friday morning false alarm at Box 340 near Main and Christian streets. The trigger appears to have been a prank by local youths who were handling a fire alarm box, with the report mentioning kids playing with the device.
The Sixty sixth Judicial Court judge and prosecutor candidates were discussed at the county convention. Judge Simon L Vandeveer holds the nomination with broad support for a full term. Prosecutors Thomas W Cullen and Oscar Lanphar were named, with Lanphar not made unanimously. Representative race features William A Barnett and Joseph Kolb. Kolb nominated. Ballard Cushman Kennedy Ford and McNeece named for county offices in Washington and White River townships.
News from Formosa reports the Pacific Mail liner Siberia in danger near Formosa with 86 first class passengers aboard including Mrs Francis Burton Harrison wife of the Philippines governor. A relief vessel was sent and the Japanese government ordered the Kanto Maru to hurry to aid.
Patoka resident Miss Lucy A. White acted as a Princeton visitor Friday, appearing in town to view local news and events and meet with residents.
Former Superintendent of City Schools Prof Rollin, once principal of the old Princeton Seminary in 1864 and Civil War veteran, addressed the high school at Friday morning's opening exercises. He served Princeton schools for years and now resides in Princeton, Ohio.
