The Red Star line steamship Lapland arrived with 10,060,060 in gold from Europe. The bullion aims to bolster the sterling exchange rate in the United States and offset U S exports to England. Ship officers did not know the bullion was aboard until nearing New York.

Charles Ti. Wagner, manager of Mary Garden and John McCormack, commends Maurice Wilkinson of this city as a young tenor with a good voice and personality. A tornado battered Elgin Illinois killing seven and injuring over 100. Military law was imposed with National Guard patrolling wrecked areas as fires burned in multiple sites. The Congregational church and Grand Theatre collapsed injuring or killing occupants.

Francisco Mine to Resume Work in Francisco Indiana

The Royal coal mine at Francisco Indiana will reopen tomorrow after being shut since a blast weeks ago that killed a shot firer. About 150 workers are to return, with damaged fire entries still sealed but not affecting other sections. Midwest Tornado Toll Rises After Palm Sunday Destruction

Tornadoes in the mid west yesterday claimed 76 lives and left hundreds of homes wrecked and many injured. Communications failed but later were restored as authorities assessed widespread damage around Chicago and its western outskirts. Debris and damaged masonry filled streets while thousands of people moved through the ruined districts.

A sweeping death toll from tornadoes across Indiana Ohio Wisconsin Michigan Illinois Missouri Georgia Alabama and neighboring areas totals seventy six dead with hundreds injured and extensive property damage. Indiana reports thirty eight dead with many others injured and multiple towns leveled. Other states record dozen plus fatalities and widespread destruction including farms barns and homes demolished.

Buick Stolen From Garage In East Mulberry Street

A 1919 Buick owned by F J Henneberger was stolen from a garage on east Mulberry Street Saturday night. Police notified neighbors and alerts sent to other cities as to the missing vehicle. An attempted break in at Dr W S W Tippett’s garage on South Hart Street also occurred Saturday night with a tampered lock observed Sunday morning.

Locals Make Good Showing At Indianapolis Rifle Meet

Princeton rifle club placed sixth in a match at the Artillery Armory under the Indiana state rifle association. Culver Academy won first, Ft. Wayne Rifle Club second, Indianapolis Hoosier Rifle Club third, Ft. Harrison fourth, Cromwell fifth. Princeton shooters totaled 723 with R S Tichenor 190, C S Baker 182, H Adams 180, Carl Blase 171. individual scores ranged from 166 to 195. Club plans a northwest range opening by early May for long range high power and .22 shooting.

Wood denies campaign abuses aimed at Michigan primary

General Leonard Wood, seeking the Republican nomination, called claims about his national committee’s campaign methods unwarranted and said Borah’s attack is meant to influence the Michigan primary next Monday April 5. He added his campaign team will answer proper inquiries about expenditures.
