High army officers report a major allied counter-drive forming to drive the German lines. The movement may take a day or more to unfold, with troops in position for a large maneuver. Despite yesterday’s German gains, the morning outlook is favorable and further French assaults are expected to continue.
Field Marshal Haig says British lines held north and south of the Somme with ground gained by counterattacks. Prisoners and machine guns were taken, with heavy enemy losses. He notes continued fierce fighting and that outpost lines were finally extended, despite strong assaults.
Washington reports the provost marshal general plans a second draft registration on June 5 for men who turned 21 since last September. The process will recur yearly so long the war lasts. Officials expect about 500000 physically fit men to join. Congress aims to pass required legislation before June 5.

The war office announced the request came as Clemenceau Lecheur and Petain met with Foch. French forces recaptured territory in the Montdidier sector and held the Avre river north of Montcheyr.
A message from Thomas and Preston Blythe of Hat tiesburg Mississippi reports the body of Sergeant Moody Blythe drowned Sunday while bathing in Leaf river near Camp Shelby has been found and will be shipped to Owensville for burial at Blythe chapel. He belonged to the machine gun company of the 151st infantry. Remains arrive Friday night.
