Terre Haute editor reports Vernie Alphonse Lewis a miner living near Mrs Balding’s home confessed to killing Mrs Balding and her three children with a flatiron after authorities grilled him. He led detectives to his doorstep and described the night, including washing his hands and leaving the scene before returning home. Police found suspenders with blood traces.
Judge Hostetter ruled for the defendant Sam T Heston and upheld the commissioners finding in the partition case of Joseph S Heston estate after two weeks of trial. Plaintiffs presented evidence prior to the decision and a former ruling had been reopened for new evidence. Commissioners named were Milton Cushman county treasurer Senator P S Armstrong and Arthur Mauck.
Evansville and the gas company filed a petition with the public service commission today and reached an agreement. It is a victory for the city as the company had claimed the rate fixed by the commission was confiscatory. The suit challenging the law providing for the commission will be dismissed.
John F. Nugent former Terre Haute police chief testified in a federal hearing against Mayor Donn M. Roberts and 27 others. He described a list of prohibition party candidates, shadowing marshals, and plans to detain election board members. He claimed payments and coercion to influence votes and noted involvement of Sheriff Shea, prize fighters, and brewery figure C. Fairbanks.
