United Press dispatch from Mar 22 reports British armies holding ground across the front, inflicting heavy losses on German storm troops. British counter attacks with tanks recaptured Deijtines while artillery and infantry battled along a 45 mile front amid foggy conditions. Experts debate German aims, with many believing a major gamble, possible curtain for actions elsewhere.
Commissioners warn Gibson county must average seven thousand dollars in daily sales for the remaining seven days of March to meet War Saving and Thrift Stamp quotas. They urge every man woman and child to buy stamps now, noting banks post offices and mail carriers sell them with 4 percent interest.
Washington dispatch notes Germany's large bombardment and attacks on the west front are viewed as the onset of a long anticipated major offensive. While the initial phase shows partial success, morale in the capital remains steady.
Highteen members of Princeton lodge of Elks were honored Thursday as the lodge dedicated a service flag for members who entered military service. Roy P. King presided. The program closed with audience singing America and a note that the 18 star flag will grow with the draft.
Ten members of Princeton lodge of Elks have sons in service totaling 14. Four fathers have two sons serving: Herman Vollmer, Arthur Mauck, E. B. Funk, and Robert Howe. The service flag lists R. S. Princeton residents prepare to welcome Company E 385th Infantry from Camp Zachary Taylor arriving by afternoon train from Louisville. Captain Davis and two lieutenants supervise a drill display at the courthouse yard before soldiers visit friends. At least 50 soldiers plus 10 basketball players are accounted for. Game starts at 9 if not delayed.
A Wednesday evening gathering at the home of Mr and Mrs William Steiner three miles southeast of the city featured Miss Elizabeth Steiner and Ava Montell Allen among the attendees. Mrs. Minerva Dixon colored widow of Valentine Dixon died at 4:30 pm Thursday at her daughter Effa Walker’s home at West and Pine. After a stroke of paralysis she had been critically ill for days. Funeral 11:00 am Saturday at Washington Street Baptist Church Henderson. Burial in Henderson. She was 80 and survived by her daughter Mrs Walker.
Mrs. Mary Hadley colored died at 12:30 Friday after months of illness. Her daughter Mrs. Ella Turner of this city survives. She recently moved here from Vincennes and will be laid to rest at Union Cemetery after funeral at 2 pm Sunday at Oliver Branch Baptist Church led by Rev. G W Dorsey.
Mrs. John Zengler returned home Thursday afternoon from East St. Louis Illinois where she had been summoned by the serious illness of her daughter Mrs. Warner Booker. She was accompanied by her son Carl Zengler who remained there. Thursday night Mrs. Booker was reported greatly improved.
Mr and Mrs W W Wilkinson of Little Rock Arkansas visit the city to spend several days with Mrs Charles Brooks in east Weter street with Mrs Brooks.
