Public opinion has decided against the anti treaty bloc led by Irreconcilables and Democrats. Senators concede the fight failed and ratification will occur with little change beyond the committee reservation cited from President Harding. The pledge denies commitment to armed force or alliance in the pact’s preamble and terms.
The Southern Railway shops report a coal on hand sufficient for at least thirty days. News says supply should last until mid April at earliest and beyond if a nationwide strike begins April 1. The railroad is not affected by Princeton mine shutdown and coal arrives from other mines, including some from Illinois. Business is said to be good though hiring of additional workers remains uncertain.
Knox County Oil Company advances construction of a modern service and filling station at Main and Water streets. A 30 by 100 foot lot south of the Princeton Hotel was purchased from Dr. AL H Rhodes. Robert A Pfold, a Princeton native now in Vincennes, is connected with the company.
Officials in New York report strong prospect of a strike by anthracite and bituminous workers starting April 1. Secretary of Labor Davis visits as negotiations continue between miners and operators with wards of wage increases eight hour day and checkoff system under dispute. Government hopes for quick settlement to avoid long disruption.
Charles H. Quinn age 63 is killed at Citizens Bank Covington while workmen move the bank safe to install a burglar alarm. Quinn, longtime superintendent of the Covington Light and Water Co, had worked for over thirty years. He leaves a widow and one daughter.
Telegrams from the American War Mothers of Indiana reached President Harding and Congress urging passage of the cash bonus bill for former service men and women. The group met at the YWCA and joined the Service Star Legion to back the original measure.
Edna Simon, 16, died after leaping from a submerged automobile to rescue her family in White River near Seymour Tud. Her parents Mr and Mrs Ten Simon and sister Marie survived, but Mrs Simon remains in critical condition. A bystander and others attempted rescues as the vehicle was swept downstream.
The Daily Democrat relays an official Hazleton bridge description from the state highway commission. Total length two and a half miles with a 1700 foot main structure, four 200 foot steel spans, four 86 foot steel spans, and 15 concrete approach spans. The design supports 20 ton rollers per span, roadway crown 38.4 feet above low water, and 35 feet clearance to low water. Bid divisions cover sub structure superstructure and approaches with a full contract also possible.
A black man was found hanged from a tree near Riverside park Indianapolis on March 16. The body was warm and believed to have died about an hour earlier. Fresh car tracks pointed to and from the tree. The name George Hopkins appeared in the victim's pocket. witnesses heard no disturbance at the club house. The discovery occurred west of White River near a golf course with players nearby.
County commissioners awarded six bridge projects in a special session. Ford bridge in Washington township priced at 1 485, Nordhorn in Mason Johnson townships 698, Fox in White River 1000, Pollard in Montgomery 626, Lofton in Montgomery 1424, Shafer in Union township 2825. Antone Sehenk of Mt Vernon won Armstrong bridge repair bid at 275.
A placard in The Daily Democrat highlights a eight inch water animal found in front of Father Hassell’s residence on Sout Race Street. Viewers call it a water dog or a tadpole, with opinions split on its identity and source, while dispatches note a Pittsburg, Kansas finding.
Indianapolis report relays remarks by Tsuinte Moore addressing his thirteen wives. Moore admits two of his wives proposed marriage, says he loved some more than others and cites education personality and singing as reasons for his appeal. He declines clarity on whether any marriage was successful.
State appellate court reversed a verdict in the Len Weiler versus Toe Diver suit tried in Gilson Circuit Court. The original decision for the plaintiff was overturned by a special judge in Indianapolis dispatches to The Daily Democrat.

In a rare joint appeal Protestant and Catholic churches urged an operators and miners conference to discuss the threatened coal strike. The Federated Council of Churches and the National Catholic Welfare Council said two years ago agreement bound both sides to meet. They argued human relations take precedence over any economic result and that destroying order in government within the coal industry is inconceivable.
About forty members of the Golden Fleece Chapter of the Eastern Star traveled by motor to Cynthiana to visit the local chapter. The host city’s chapter performed the degree work and several local residents attended, led by Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wilkins and a long list of members and guests.
T M Catt of Hazleton displayed an 86 year old letter dated July 15 1836 to his mother by cousin Hiram Frederick then in Wapello County Iowa. The note states Wapello County’s population was 14000. Catt, 71, has lived in Hazleton 17 years and uses a Hickory cane from the War of 1812. He is married.
Wabash and White River continue to rise with 36 hours expected before cresting local areas. Wabash at Mt Carmel reached 16.8 feet, Hazleton saw rising White River levels, and a Clay City levee broke flooding Eel river bottoms. Property damage reported. no loss of life yet.
Chicago residents live in fear as criminals levy tribute on building work. State's attorney Robert I. Crowe warns that home costs include this tax by a gang operating in the loop with numerous witnesses present, while the law fails to stop murder.
A total of 165 dilapidated box cars in Southern yards will be dismantled for the iron and steel they contain. Master Mechanic Bunn states that those wishing to obtain lumber may assist in wrecking the cars. Much of the timber will be usable for building and fencing needs.
The Princeton Post No. 25 of the American Legion approves a four fold adjusted compensation plan and urges immediate congressional action. A resolution endorsing the soldiers bonus is sent to Indiana representatives and publicized through county papers.
Charles H Fought of Prince ton Va sue s for 335 balance claimed for drilling a well to 1300 feet on N W Schafer farm Section 26 town 1 south range 9 west and for foreclosure of a lien on the well casing tubing and lease against P E Tichenor George S Clark Eli G Huber Peoples Petroleum Co and N W Schafer in Knox circuit court with venue changed from Tippecanoe.
Charles F. E. Rush, formerly of Princeton and long time conductor of the Cannelton branch, is named trainmaster replacing Tr. A. Camp. Camp returns to the dispatcher's office on the second trick, with C. E. Willis taking the third. Rush will reside again in Princeton.
Editor Jim McCormick recalls the only capital punishment in Gibson County history. William Camp was executed for murdering John Bilder with Sheriff Hauss declining to pull the lever, leaving the duty to deputy John Bingham as crowds gathered around the jail yard. The event ended without incident amid a curious mob and a now-missing page reference.
