More than 1000 longshoremen, checkers, and stevedores employed by coastwise steamship companies struck in New York. They demand a wage rise from 65 cents to 1 dollar straight time and from 1 to 1.20 dollars per hour for overtime.
Washington March 13. The French government sent oral instructions via Ambassador Jusserand to the State Department asking for a full explanation of President Wilson’s charge that France’s militaristic party controlled the nation. The French note is described as a friendly inquiry rather than anger.
Evansville Manufacturing Co producers of cigar boxes planned a Mt Vernon branch in Ragland building after a failed Princeton location due to unionization fears. If Mt Vernon proves suitable the entire plant may relocate, employing many women.
Washington March 12. A bill making it illegal to wear army or navy uniforms during labor disturbances was ordered favorably by the Senate Military Committee. It targets rioters in Gary Indiana where uniforms were worn in steelworker riots. Violators face fines up to 300 dollars and up to six months imprisonment.
Sickness of Rev and Mrs Halstead cancels preaching service at Broadway Christian Church Sunday. A brief communion service will follow Sunday School. Report indicates Rev and Mrs Halstead are slightly improved today.
The Gibson County Odd Fellows association held its annual meeting at the I O O F hall with George H. Padgett presiding. Officers named for the year include Padgett, Sherman Lockwood, W A Dill, and T J Thomas.
Petersburg March 13. The Big Four Railroad plans coal yards here with enough trackage for 1000 coal cars. Coal trains will be formed locally with crews in Petersburg, while heavy rails will be laid to replace light rails for faster service between Evansville and Terre Haute. The Globe Company accelerates stripping mine work at Rogers with one shovel and a second shovel soon.
Frank O Neal of this city pleaded guilty to automobile speeding before Mayor A Shubart on Friday night. The charge was filed Monday. He was fined one dollar and costs and paid the fine.
Mrs Alvin Heuring wife of Alvin Heuring editor of the Winslow Dispatch died at her home at 3 o clock this afternoon after several weeks illness. She is survived by her husband and one son and was a devoted member of the M E church. Services will be held at the church Sunday afternoon.
Mrs. Sarah A. Cooper mother of Mrs. Emma W. Wilson and sister of Hon. W. Hunter is gravely ill at her Jasper home. A longtime influential teacher in Southern Indiana she is known across the region.

Washington March 15 The government has taken over the entire oil production of the Osage Indian nation totaling fifteen million barrels a year to insure oil for the navy.
Knoxville Tennessee has 78818 inhabitants up 41472 since 1910 census. This figure released by the census bureau on March 13 records Knoxville's population growth.

The state tax board Major Cragin will hear the Coliseum board petition at the court house Tuesday at 1 30 PM. The meeting is public and open to all interested in building a memorial coliseum for Gibson county soldiers and sailors. The site chosen is the block west of the traction station.
Hoosier poet William Herschell and Kin Hubbard of Indianapolis will visit the Princeton Elks Lodge next Wednesday night March 17. An initiation country supper and smoker are planned with overnight stays and a dance Thursday in their honor.
In Bloomington on March 13 Jefferson High School of Lafayette defeated Technical High School of Indianapolis 18 to 9 to secure a state tourney semi final berth. The Jefferson Hartford City match is set for 2 pm.
The American Legion will hold a smoker at City Hall Monday night March 22. All Legion members are urged to attend and soldiers are invited. Information about the Legion will be available at the meeting. Smokes will be furnished by the Legion.
