American forces in Lorraine led a first major raid east of Beillon with 50 Ohio troops and 60 French sappers advancing 60 yards through no man’s land to seize objectives. German positions were demolished by combined fire and explosives with four American wounded and seven German prisoners taken.
Survivors of the Shiloh battle will gather on the battlefield April 6 and 7 for services. Comrade George P Washburn of Ottawa Kansas is association president. Isaac Yantes of Findlay Illinois is senior vice commander. The Shiloh Pittsburgh Landing clash left about 23000 killed or wounded. A visit to the National Park is planned as part of the events.

Mrs. George Wolfe about 30 residing at 1032 South Seminary was seriously burned when she poured gasoline into a tub of hot water thinking it was kerosene. Neighbors and firefighters limited the blaze. she was taken to Methodist Hospital in serious condition.

Raymond Cox, a soldier stationed at Belleville, Tr., spent Sunday in the city as a guest of friends.
Sanford Trippett departed Monday afternoon for Indianapolis on a trainees trip.
Secretary of War Newton D. Baker arrived in France aboard an American armored cruiser. He met French and American officials in Cherbourg and Paris, conferred with President Poincare, and planned to inspect American sectors and meet officers and troops to stress full U.S. backing and wartime logistics. The party was greeted by Gen Pershing and military officials.
A Gibson County Council of Defense meeting backed Food Administrator Henry Tichenor and Fuel Administrator William Weese. The group approved state regulations, pledged support, and ordered a delegation including Weese Sanford Trippet and T M McDonald to Indianapolis to urge county enforcement or repeal of flour rules, with further state council discussions planned.
Secretary Baker arrived in a French port to inspect Allied forces and confer with American officers. The trip, described as military not diplomatic, will encompass construction projects including docks, railroads, and ordnance bases as Baker travels from front lines accompanied by Major General W. M. Black, Colonel M. L. Brett, and Baker’s private secretary.
Joe Cox is held on a Gibson County warrant for desertion and child related charges. He is under a trust at Vincennes and will be returned for trial.
Washington reports the American postal service asks relatives of soldiers to use rank and title instead of Mr and to write full given names with return addresses in ink. The Post Office Department cautions that pencil writing can become illegible in transit and stresses proper addressing for mail sent to troops overseas.
