The grand jury sat for over a week and discharged on Wednesday afternoon reporting 40 indictments mostly for misdemeanors. It also filed a report on the condition of county institutions and adjourned.
An alarm from box 28 before 10 am sent firefighters to William Rowe’s residence on Stor Mont avenue where a small fire spread to the adjacent restaurant building. The roof caught fire from a defective flue. Damage was slight.
A Pratt County bank deposit reveals about $2,000 tied up for almost five decades by an elderly Princeton couple. The savings, split among four children after the father's death, included $5 bills from 1874 issued by the People National Bank, signed by cashier W L Dorsey and president W L Evans, plus later signatures from Dr W P Welborn. The bills, stored for years, were found with other era notes and government silver certificates.
In Indianapolis March 10 Judge A B Anderson ruled a conspiracy existed in Terre Haute to steal the election. Witness Claude Patton testified of crooked work, false registrations, and payments to voters to favor Democratic candidates. Patton claimed Chief Holler gave revolvers to plant with opponents and identified over 50 false registrations. Tom Hanly corroborated Patton’s accounts as court proceedings opened in the Robers et al Terre Haute case.
The German converted cruiser Rittel Friedrich slipped into Hampton Roads with 326 prisoners aboard. Captain Thierich ens said repairs would be made and the ship would return to sea. The arrival was unheralded and even the German consul was unaware.
Governor Ralston likely will sign only a few of the sixty nine General Assembly measures today with doubts about the teachers pension bill. He may reject this provision as vague and unfunded, while many lawmakers have departed Indianapolis after months of work.
London March 16 The German submarine U-20, one of the most powerful U boats with a 290 mile cruising radius, was rammed and sunk today by the British destroyer Ariel in the Channel. The crew surrendered amid anger at torpedoing three steamers, fueling calls to try the German submarine crews as pirates. The Ariel is a 780 ton destroyer tasked with hunting submarines.
Sanitarium boosters have called a public meeting for Friday evening at the court house. The meeting is for the public and all citizens concerned with the city welfare are urged to attend. Plans for reopening the institution will be discussed. no one will be asked to take shares unless they wish.

Nathan Hilling 45, a machinist, shot his wife 40 in Richmond Indiana about 6 pm Tuesday, then took refuge in a barn loft. Police officer John Culley and two boys were wounded as officers stormed the barn, finding Hilling dead after a siege by 20 officers.
Jasper N Davidson of Nortix Hart Street informs that his granddaughter Miss Agnes Kime of Armita Georgia is seriously ill with typhoid fever. Miss Kime often visits her grandparents and has many friends.
Harry Thaw, wearing a heavy sweater and with a stiff neck, directed moves to prove his sanity today at Matteawan. He urged his counsel to show he was never violently insane and acted normally, with a decisive test on admitting sanity evidence deferred. Matteawan employees depicted Thaw's flight graphically as the prosecution continued testimony.
Athens reports the swearing in of a new cabinet led by Premier Gounaras on March 10. The government transition follows the prior administration and signals a shift in policy direction as the new ministers take office in the capital.
