John L. Lewis states miners are ready to meet mine owners in conference to sign a new wage scale. However few operators have signified willingness to meet. The miners press for a negotiated settlement as the stalemate continues.
President Lewis of the United Mine Workers warns that miners will not strike on April 1 but will seek a conference with coal operators if Secretary Davis can convene talks. He says some operators refuse meetings, threatening a suspension of coal production unless a new agreement is reached before April.
Nation wide coal strike effort stalls as President Harding invites a conference of warring parties. operators fail to respond leaving government and labor groups divided. Officials report limited replies and uncertain prospects for averting disruption to coal production and wartime mine operations.
