Former Princeton resident Mrs Ella McCormick is gravely ill at her Louisville home after a relapse post operation. Charles E McCormick city editor of Clairon News was summoned Saturday afternoon to be with his mother. Fears for recovery are openly expressed as friends await a hopeful turn for the better.
Harry K Thaw opens his third jury trial in the Stanford White murder case in New York. The jury was swiftly formed and witnesses and evidence are expected to be introduced this afternoon as the high profile case continues after nine years of legal battles.
In Ayrshire No. 7 mine of Ayrshire Mining Co between Ayrshire and Oakland City three men William Smith 60 James Wiggs 38 Charles Sharp 40 were crushed while repairing a slate fall. Rescue efforts recovered the bodies about 7 PM. Coroner's inquest will be held. families mourn.
In Indianapolis, March 8, the defense accepted a jury in the federal election conspiracy case against Mayor Dora Roberts and 27 co-defendants. Juror questions focused on whether the panel believes the crimes occurred and if the defendants are guilty. One juror was excused for hearing impairment as 23 jurors were screened. The panel was escorted from the courtroom under guard at noon.
Fire aboard the French liner LaTouraine was nearly extinguished at 10 o clock last night. Cruisers patrolling the channel joined the burning ship and are escorting it into Havre. LaTouraine, traveling at 14 knots, expects to reach port tonight under convoy.
A large audience gathered at Broad Way Christian Church to hear Rev W P Dearing president of Oak land City College discuss The Inheritance Of The American Youth. The talk targeted young men and boys and was praised as one of the series best. Music was by a quartet James Lewis Cochrane and Hallock. Next Sunday’s speaker will be Col A L Maxwell of Lawrenceville Indiana.
Indianapolis March 8 detective Robert H Abel reports the Catherine Winters case solved. The missing New Castle girl, presumed dead, is now located in a convent and said to be alive and well after a two month search across several cities.
A March 3 fire endangered the Thomas A. Edison plant in West Orange New Jersey as volunteers battled to save the goal seat master records. Mrs Edison urged her husband to wear protective rubber boots or leave. Edison, in his lab, was said to be ankle deep in water directing the firefight before complying.
In Indianapolis on March 8 the senate passed a rule bill enabling any citizen to abate immoral houses by civil proceedings while women spectators left the chamber. Democratic leaders pressed for immediate submission of a constitutional convention question, sparking factional tension as motions to advance the initiative failed amid procedural clashes.
Carl Auerode, indicted with four others in the government passport case, pleads guilty in a New York court and is sentenced to three years in the Atlanta federal penitentiary. He held a major importer firm post and admitted participation in forging and using passports for German reservists to return home.
Senator Shively informs veteran Squire J P Simpson of Princeton that his pension is raised to fifty dollars per month under a special act. Simpson has been nearly blind for some time and welcomes the government increase with gratitude. The raise was included in recent congress pension legislation.
News from Bucharest and Washington reports mounting belief that Italy and most Balkan states will join the European war shortly. British French plans target Constantinople by month’s end, with Turkish German forces possibly evacuating if Constantinople falls. A French cruiser was reportedly damaged and a British ship hit during Dardanelles bombardment security.
At a meeting of Southern Railway Fire departments in New Orleans the chiefs gathered for a group photo. A C Bailey, chief at Princeton shops, is noted in the March Southern News Bulletin as a member of the party.
In Evansville Indiana on March 8 an audience of eight district suffrage leagues gathered at the Y M C A to elect officers and endorse the Indiana Suffrage Association constitution. Miss Bertha Pratt King of Terre Haute urged economic independence for women as key to happiness. Mayor Bosse welcomed attendees, and Mrs Henry Kister of Princeton responded. The morning session covered business and reports while the afternoon featured Miss King’s address and a music program. New officers include Mrs C Q Baltzell Princeton chairwoman and Mrs Frederick Erlbacher Evansville secretary treasurer. The endorsement of the new state constitution passed with minor exceptions, awaiting district approvals before taking effect. Mrs M P Hollingsworth of Princeton chaired the morning.
Washington March 8 The controller of the currency issued a call for a report of the conditions of all national banks on March 4. The action aims to assess liquidity, capital, and compliance across institutions nationwide.
The Rev W A Roush of Columbus Ohio will preach at Broadway Christian Church Wednesday at 7 30 PM The Reverend has been warmly recommended to the local congregation from other churches where he has labored as minister The general public is invited and all members of the congregation are urged to attend and meet the Reverend Roush
Rocco, the Italian murderer known as the Slayer of Man for the sum of $25.09, was executed by electric chair at Rockview prison in Rockview, Pa. The case marks the first use of the chair in the state.
During Sunday morning services the First Baptist and General Baptist congregations held union worship and received a beautiful communion set donated by the Daughters of Progress. The joint committees accepted the gift unanimously and plan to use it at the next communion services.
Samuel Willis Greer of Lyles and Nancy Roberts of Princeton were married at Tom Ford's home with the officiating minister present. The couple is listed in the Mt. Carmel Register.
