Thousands from Southern Indiana visited the Mecca of a mine on Sunday. Guards kept spectators back from the pit as crews attempted to recover a heavy generator. Water backed up in the shaft and air shaft, suggesting a possible cave-in or blockage.
Fifteen defendants charged with rioting went to trial in circuit court as jurors were selected for a mass case stemming from the Francisca incident in June. Arch Turpin pleaded guilty to an indictment modification and the judge took the plea under advisement ahead of a trial that will span several days.
Eunice Booker alias Beanice Zanenuter pleaded guilty to contributing to delinquency of a minor in a court appearance this afternoon. The judge ordered further disposition within days as the case proceeds.
Airs J O Harmeyer and son Janes of Evansville spent the weekend visiting relatives of her parents. Rev J Roadwards and wife Encle Deve Montgomery north of town are ill with influenza. The county LWV invites women to a quarterly meeting at City Wall on Tuesday March 7 at 2500 hours. Program topics include The All Time Health Officer for Gibson County by Dr. Irwin Arthur Indicate Laws of Benefit to Women by Miss Florence Strain The Bonus Bill by Mrs. Julia Woods.
Chicago March 6 railroads press for a further ten percent wage cut for more than 1.6 million workers. The Railway Labor Board heard petitions affecting most classes of railroad workers while yard and train service staff negotiate separately. If approved the cuts could slash annual wages by about 1.0 billion dollars, excluding yard crews and rail yard workers.
Jab Wood Jr deputy superintendent of education in California urged National Vocational Association delegates to base American schooling on equality of opportunity and to use intelligence tests to limit education to those with sufficient native endowment. Augustus Thomas Maine commissioner said education has advanced with educational engineering and state leaders must be technical experts in running school systems.
Attorneys for the petitioners and remonstrators failed to agree on a special judge at a Saturday meeting in the large courtroom. Judge R C Baltzell was disqualified due to a conflict with his brother who owns nearby farm land. A proposer noted that Governor McCray may appoint the trial judge if the disagreement continues.
Margaret, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar White of Fort Branch, died Sunday night at 8 30 due to pneumonia. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 2 00 at the family home with interment in Walnut Hill.
Obituary notes Mrs Angennette McGLEARY aged 66 of Haubstadt died after a three week illness in St Louis while visiting her son Lucian. Funeral services were held at 10:50 AM with Rev Oliphant officiating. Burial in Providence cemetery. Survived by one son Lucian and four daughters Rosa Welman Margaret Goodyear Martha Sufka Jane Montgomery plus two brothers Madison Stevens Ned Stevens. Resided in Haubstadt for 46 years.
Mrs Margaret Makemson Millis Ward received word of the death of Mrs Ogargaret Makemson Millis at her Leavenworth Kansas home on Sunday March Dth aged ST years. She was sister to A G Makemson of this city. Mrs Millis is the last Makemson pioneer of the area. Four nieces survive: Mrs Robert Woodburn Miss Hettie Makemson Mrs WJ Davis and Mrs A N Sturgis.
New York reports comedian Bert Williams died at his home after collapsing on stage in Detroit last Monday. He was brought to New York Thursday for treatment, received a blood transfusion, but relapsed Saturday and did not recover.
The county commissioners began their regular monthly session this morning with the standard processing of bills and claims against the county reflecting routine administrative business.
Chicago reports Louise Kiener a 12 year old Evansville girl vanished on a Chicago and Eastern Illinois train and believed kidnapped and sold into slavery. Relatives say she was with a flashily dressed woman after the train left Evansville. The girl was to visit her uncle William Kiener in Chicago.
Lawrence Martin reports Washington that the administration moves to rally support for the four power Pacific treaty. It warns the Senate and nation that rejection could trigger an instant Anglo Japanese alliance and negate naval limitation, with lawmakers split and secrecy a sticking point. Secretary Hughes may be allowed to speak on proper terms.
Judge Hugh Means voided a district court ruling upholding a three inch below knee skirt requirement by the Vinhimd rural high school board. Alice Hansen and Maude Buchanan had been suspended last Tuesday amid the dispute.
Miss Isabelle Watt returned home after a trip to Chicago. She accompanied her little nephew Joe Fulton of Viroqua Wisconsin who has been visiting there and met his father during the trip.
W. N. Sutton proprietor of Sutton's meat market was hurt Sunday afternoon when his car overturned while he tried to avoid a collision near Baldwin Heights. He suffered bruises to the left thigh and a severely mashed right foot though officials say injuries are not serious.
