Rescuers in Layland West Virginia reported forty seven miners alive after being entombed for three days in No 3 mine of the New River and Pocahontas Coal Co follow–up said more men may be hidden in a distant chamber as rescue efforts continued the explosion last Wednesday trapped 182 workers.
In Indiana, the House rejected the Stotsenburg amendments and faced a new push for a constitutional suffrage amendment for women. A Rule bill duplicate offered hope but stalled. Separately, a 10 hour 55 hour labor limit for women was struck, while another move to restore nine hours a day failed. Governor Ralston signed the Van Nuys bill enabling a new four year term for the state board of accounts chief. Thornton’s tax stamp repeal passed the House 79 to 7 and heads to the governor. The garnishee bill fell short with no vote.
Washington reports the Mexican situation growing more menacing as Carranza faces sharp demands from the United States. The administration warns that starvation threaten the capital and urges him to control the Vera Cruz railroad. Villa presses Tampico, while fears of foreigners in Mexico City rise and allied intervention plans are set aside.
City council reached an agreement with Prince ton Light and Power on a new commercial lighting contract. A sliding scale for rates will start at 08 cents for the first 100 kWh and drop to 03 12 cents for over 800 kWh, with a $1 monthly minimum and a 50 cent per horsepower minimum. The contract will be sent to the public utilities commission for approval after minor adjustments.
Federal District Attorney Cline announced that large stores of cocaine morphine opium and other drugs have been collected at Gary and Hammond Indiana and other Midwest cities by a syndicate believed to be planning to evade the Harrison federal narcotics act which recently became law. The investigation follows a lengthy federal probe into possible law evasion efforts.

Princeton High School basketball seeks a finals berth in the southern Indiana tournament after a 28 to 15 upset over Mt. Vernon on Saturday. Tonight’s decisive game will determine representation in the state tournament and reflects Princeton’s revived hopes despite expectations favoring Mt. Vernon.
Evansville reports the fourth day of the state farm institute drew near 20,000 attendees. Kentucky Day features Congressman A. O. Stanley, a good roads session at Majestic theater, and the institute ball to close. Alfalfa talk by W. E. Stevens drew large crowds, patriotic night highlighted by Major Byron Parsons and Col. Robert E. Elwood. Local national guard company and G A R members joined the city in a flag filled program.
A Friday night fight in Winslow left George Wilkins, 23, seriously wounded, following an argument after a trip to Huntingburg. Sewell Heacock, 21, and his brother Clarence were arrested on a charge of attempted murder, later held pending investigation. The injured man was treated and expected to recover. A suspect was detained, then released, as officers sought others involved in the incident.
The French steamer La Touraine with 84 passengers and 200 crew is 760 miles west of Brest, en route from New York to Havre. Four steamers plus White Star Line’s Arabic rush to aid as Valentia wireless confirms a fire off Ireland’s coast. Passengers include American doctors and nurses.
