United Press reports the 67th congress held four House sessions and five Senate sessions. The Senate worked from March 4 to March 15 1921 to confirm Harding's cabinet while overall sessions spanned 1921 to 1925 with detailed dates for each session.
The Sixty Seventh Congress adjourned amid last minute bids on bills. The budget system for government appropriations was seen as a major GOP goal, while the soldier bonus failed to pass over funding concerns. Bipartisan action also produced fuel measures after the coal strike and large appropriation packages lasting to June 30, 1924. The British debt refunding bill of 4.6 billion was approved. the merchant marine subsidy failed due to a Senate filibuster.
The Indiana Senate passed the Dunes park bill sending it to Governor McCray as the legislature neared adjournment. New York March 5 A Frenchwoman on trial for the murder of Oscar Martellier an insurance broker Oct 16 testified she learned from him that her husband was unfaithful and a thief leading her to divorce him and claim her assets. She said Martellier betrayed her and she contemplated suicide amid emotional strain.
A Senate committee report dated March 5 warns that the nation may be forced to pay one dollar per gallon for gasoline if a few major oil companies keep manipulating prices as they have since 1920. The document suggests the public must be prepared for higher fuel costs in coming years.
Unsettled conditions are expected with probable rain Tuesday and in the southern portion tonight. Warmer temperatures tonight in the central and northwest portions. Sunday shows a high of 50 and a low around 25 with cloudy skies. Sunset Monday at 5:47 and sunrise Tuesday at 6:16.
In Boonville Indiana a stranger offered $25 to General Baptist Church on Manin Street for “caring on good work.” Pastor Martin opposed accepting Klan money, leading to a board meeting set for March 12 to decide. money to be returned if not accepted.
Sabbath services at Memorial M E Church drew large attendance as Dr. Dodd Ridge, the pastor, baptized 36 persons and admitted 44 probationers to full church membership.
London reports Germany has bought a large portion of the United States shipping fleet as part of penalties from the defeat of a ship subsidy bill. The North German Lloyd Company gains six passenger cargo steamers 5000 to 10000 tons, while Hugh Stinnes acquires 12 vessels 4000 to 8000 tons forming Baltic and Mediterranean fleets.
National Detective bureau officials from Indianapolis traveled to the city Monday to disburse a reward for the conviction of Adolph Sills the Riggs Department store robber. The money was paid to Norman Hart former commander of Princeton post American Legion.
Automobiles driven by Ishmael Compton and Merrit Howe collide at the Broadway and Race Street corner Saturday. A second car, driven by an unknown motorist, crashes into the rear at Broadway and Gibson Street. A truck operated by Jesse Greek is involved.
Lawrence Martin reports in Washington that Harry Lame Duck Harr, nicknamed Abe Martin, assumed duties as postmaster general. He declined to discuss plans or policies, deflecting questions on firing Democratic postmasters, civil service abolishment for postmasters, or broad forecasts, while signaling a traditional spoils approach in politics.
In Indianapolis Governor McCray received a confidential AG Lesh opinion on constitutionality of a bill banning the 500 mile auto race and Memorial Day events with admission charges. The legislature faced clashes over how race proceeds would be allocated to the state highway department or counties. A drunk driving bill passed the house with penalties up to imprisonment on the penal farm for repeat offenses. A women’s representation bill for political parties lingered without action.
M Kell, charged with assaulting 15 year old Evelyn Armstrong a Mt Glympius high student, was arrested in Vincennes Friday. He waived arraignment Monday in circuit court and was released on bond of 1000 dollars for appearance later. Trial date not yet set.
President Harding asked Americans to back his plan for the United States to join the permanent court of international justice. In a letter to Ohio Lieutenant Governor Bloom he said Congress recess offers a chance to win overwhelming public opinion for participation. He argued adherence to the court would be a safe, proper step for the nation.
Elias C Lambert a longtime Southern shops blacksmith died Sunday at 1 40 am at 210 East Spruce Princeton. Military veteran of the 63rd Illinois Infantry he served under Sherman and was discharged in 1865. Survived by his wife Phoebe J Lambert and five children, funeral Tuesday at his residence conducted by Rev J E Murr with interment at Walnut Hill cemetery near Fort Branch.
A posse led by Sheriff Hollen cornered and captured an outlaw group aboard a house boat near Mount Carmel. Authorities reported the operation proceeded without incident and yielded the suspects. Local residents and deputies assisted in the pursuit and ensuing arrest.
Princeton and Mt Carmel officers raided a house boat at the Patoka river mouth uncovering a 15 gallon still, bottles and corks, three gallons of white mule, cracked corn and rye. The boat reportedly belonged to Frank and William Appleton. one owner watched the raid from the Illinois shore as sheriff Hollen and others led the search.
March 5 report says Chancellor Cuño may ask a special Reichstag session to sever diplomatic relations with France over the Mannheim Karlsruhe and Darmstadt occupations. The unrest spurred protests in Berlin and Ruhr as Leipzig opened with 100000 visitors. Four Germans were killed and several wounded in clashes with French troops.
