Officials from the C and E L and railways met at Evansville to plan emergency track around the Princeton mine if caving continues. A survey for a westside track has begun and wreckers are removing damaged generators and boilers as slides continue with quicksand evident.
William Livewood a 53 year old former postmaster and his daughter Ethel 18 died after their car overturned on the Lincoln highway about six miles from Bedford Indiana early Friday. The backseat passengers Jelyis Park and Geneva Rogers escaped with minor injuries. The group was en route to a basketball tournament in Bedford from French Lick when their vehicle veered off the pavement and wrecked in a three foot ditch.
President Dearing announces a donation from Mrs. Gertrude Cox of Evansville. The deed covers about 200 acres of land valued at around $40,000, located four miles below Evansville on the Henderson road, to the college endowment fund.
The first defendants charged with riot stemming from the Francisco Mine trouble last summer will face a jury Monday. Sixteen defendants will be tried in groups, with fifty jurors called and many witnesses expected. Conviction penalties include a fine up to 500 and up to 90 days in jail. Defendants listed: William Bruck, Dallas Devine, Bert Dowd, Frank Bolin Francisco, Leonard Gayer, John Reed, Dale Stapleton, Earl Hinkle, Joe Vickers, Arvil Duke, Vivian White, John Jett, Arch Turpin, Ham Erwin, Roscoe Erwin, Lawrence Evans.
Painesville Ohio reports a jitney bus loaded with passengers failed to heed the watchman red signal and was struck by a New York Central fast mail train at about midnight. The collision at the grade crossing left 13 dead and many injured as bodies were hurled along the track for 400 yards. all 19 passengers had either died or been injured.
Mrs Minnie Andrews and Charles Dill married on Friday February 24 in Henderson Kentucky by Rev Eugh pastor of the Baptist church. They were joined by Miss Stoley and Mr Hoover of Princeton and after the ceremony returned to Princeton where they will reside.
In Chicago on March 4 1930s era report, Harvey Church was strapped to a chair and hanged for the murders of two automobile salesmen. Despite last minute appeals from his lawyers, Judges Scanlon and David refused clemency as reporters watched for the first time in prison history.
Mrs Elizabeth Marchand a well known resident of Haubstadt died at 3 30 am at the home of her son Dr E V Marchand. She was 85 and died of bronchial pneumonia. Funeral at 1 pm Monday at Christian church with Rev Sherer of Evansville. Burial at Warrenton. Survived by three sons E V Marchand of Haubstadt George of Minneapolis Fred of Los Angeles and seven daughters Mrs Peter Magenheimer Chandler Mrs James Richardson Indianapolis Mrs Gus Stankel Haubstadt Mrs Axel Arnold Chicago Mrs Frank Bacon Los Angeles Mrs Paul Peterson Princeton and Miss Emma Marchand Hyansville.
A busy week in Oakland City with residents at an Auto Show in Tivansville and a Mayo Brothers Institute visit in Rochester. Local events include a mission program, club meetings, and a marriage at the Baptist Parsonage. A 200 acre Evansville gift funds Oakland City College, valued at about 40000 dollars.
In Indianapolis on March 4 the Hoosier State Auto Association endorses the warning Be safe not sorry as it continues a state wide safety crusade. A. G. Lupton urges drivers to signal, slow at blind intersections, and stop look and listen at rail crossings to prevent accidents. Mt Olympus defeated Princeton 16 to 14 at Owensville as Princeton ends its run with Gabbert scoring all Princeton field goals and Kolb’s mishap breaking an electric light affecting the final minutes. Jasper, Spurgeon and Mt Olympus remain in the hunt for the finals with two spots left.
Friday night results include Princeton 17 Union 19 and Hazleton 16 Owensville 14. Saturday morning games feature Spurgeon 16 FR Branch 13 and Jasper 20 Velpen 17 with Mt Olympus 16 Princeton 14. Saturday afternoon Spurgeon 15 Hazleton 12 and Jasper versus Mt Olympus at 3 p.m.
A planned motor car service between Stewartsville and Evansville gained momentum after a conference with J B Fohuson of the Chamber of Commerce and H J Roth of the Titionis Central railroad. The line rests on data gathered by Mr Johnson to assess demand and profitability.
On Friday May 3 the filing period opened for the general primary. Only John G. Garrison, Democratic candidate for Union township trustee, had his petition received by Circuit Clerk Kays.
In Washington March 4 Prohibition Commissioner Haynes revoked Fleischmann Yeast Company industrial alcohol permits and ordered agency staff to halt supplies. The Newberry issue fuels Michigan Republican primary with Rep Patrick Kelly challenging Sen Townsend and pledging big spending as a key issue. Kelly cites Townsend’s support of Newberry in the Newberry Ford campaign and argues on spending and corruption grounds. Melly, former Michigan lieutenant governor and nine year congressman, is noted for naval appropriations work and Knox opposition.
Indiana weather forecast calls for fair skies with rising temperatures tonight and Sunday. The high reaches 42 and the low 26 with clear conditions. The historical note recalls last year’s March 8 had a high 60 and low 82 with clear skies. Temperature at 6 am today was 26 with sunset at 4:46.
