A mine engine room collapsed at 8 AM trapping and endangering workers as debris and fast spreading quicksand threaten to cave the boiler rooms and electrical gear valued over 100000. Cracks widen around the pit and trains are urged to pass cautiously while rescue efforts continue.
Los Angeles detectives launched a search for a well known screen actor linked by Mrs. Kiohn Rupp to a bootlegging case. Rupp said the actor acted as a go between for bootleggers and narcotics distributors and could arrange jobs, tying him to the raid on her West Washington street home.
New York police and coast to coast narcotics agents press ongoing push against an international drug ring tied to a murder in Waylor and a Los Angeles case. Col. Carleton Simon reports 300-plus February arrests in New York with more than 600 so far this year and says Hollywood is a key link in the narcotics network.
Dr Hubert Work nominated by the president to serve as postmaster general succeeding Will Hays whose resignation takes effect Saturday. The White House announced the formal action after a conference with the president and prior death of Shaunessy in the Knickerbocker disaster creates vacancies for first and second assistant postmaster generals.

Princeton lodge of Elks named its officers for the year to start April 1 at a regular meeting attended by over 150 members. A social session followed. Officers include Exalted Ruler Richard Smith, Esquire Leading Knight Frank R Harris, Esteemed Loyal Knight Arvil W Gibson, Lecturing Knight Ben H Wett, Secretary Relin Maxam, Treasurer Elza Zimmerman, Tiler Joseph Vollmer, Trustee AWB Criswell, Representative to Grand Lodge H Lynn Lucas, Alternate Delegate Paul S Brownlee.
Jurors for the March term were drawn Wednesday. Fifty talesmen were not required for riot-case service. Grand and petit jurors listed include Arthur Gudgel Patoka Ott Hollis Calum Barton and George Hudelon among others with names such as Carter, Decker, and Kolb also named in the pool.
Earl Turney aged 22 of Columbus Ohio was robbed and left unconscious beside his car near a remisside after giving a ride to a stranger in this city Tuesday night. The incident occurred on March 2 and police are investigating the assault.

A party of Big Four railroad officials including the general manager inspected Gibson county coal fields on Wednesday. President Johnson of Francisco Mining Co. and attorney C. O. A Gibson county meeting in the courtroom selected Mrs. Frank Archer of Walnut Grove as the federation delegate to the Indianapolis state meeting on March 7. Attendees represented multiple clubs including Washington township, Walnut Grove, Owensville, Center township, Union school, Patoka, Washington Wednesday, West Broadway, Decker Chapel, and more. A motion approved a $1.50 membership fee for farm women with a male federation member, while landowning women with no male present pay $5.00. Weather caused some clubs to be absent.
Washington March 1 American Legion leaders favor a house plan replacing cash bonuses with loanable insurance certificates. They expect loans up to 50 percent of the certificate value, with no cash bonus for most beneficiaries, a scheme viewed as acceptable to Secretary Mellon though not fully studied.
