A large group of applicants took the teachers examination, establishing a record with sixty-eight participants. The January session drew more examinees than the monthly average, signaling rising interest in teaching credentials.
Senator Joseph W. Bailey of Texas said Louisiana will seek Supreme Court permission to file an original suit in the name of the state to restrain the federal government from admitting Cuban sugar duty free under the reciprocity provision of the new tariff law. The suit tests the validity of the tariff allowing Cuban sugar free of a 20 percent duty.
In Mexico City on March 2 American Charge O'Shaughnessy said guards at the American embassy were removed due to General Huerta being drunk and causing anti American sentiment. General Planquet claimed Huerta controls rebels and will crush them. In Chihuahua General Villa announced no further negotiations with foreign diplomats, referring issues to General Carranza.
In Scranton Pennsylvania a blizzard left about two thousand people marooned by the week storm. By Sunday two had died and many more were in serious condition as crews struggled to reach pockets of passengers and residents trapped around the Billy Sunday Tabernacle area with snow banked against buildings.

A 50 foot water tank atop Bier house Bros wholesale warehouse in Vincennes caught fire early Monday. Heated to prevent freezing, the gas heater exploded, igniting the tank’s lower section. Firefighters fought the blaze, reaching the top with lines and extinguishing the fire with minor loss. Firemen were icicles after the effort.
