Bulletin from Chicago reports that maintenance of way workers will pause the strike until after July 3 as President Grable consults with union advisors. The delay does not affect the shop crafts strike set for 10 o clock tomorrow, and talks continue on wage petitions and contract-system abolitions.
Chicago reports chairman Ben Hooper subpoenas Bert Jewell head of the shop crafts and Timothy Healy treasurer of the stationary engineers. Jewell defied the board over a conference, claiming the board overstepped its authority. A nationwide shopmen strike looms as talks continue with rail executives and unions. Terre Haute shops also announce a walkout at 10 am Saturday.
Washington officials hoped to avert the 400000 union walkout set for 10 oclock tomorrow by a possible auction today to delay the strike pending settlement. In Cleveland initial action by locomotive engineers and railroad trainmen brotherhoods ordered nonessential work normally done by strikers.
Fargo North Dakota voters solidly favored Lynn Frazier as he led Senator McCumber by counts across 1,424 precincts 63 751 to 63 116 with about 100 000 votes yet to be tallied. Nonpartisan leaders expect two North Dakota senators after the November elections. Senator Ladd remains in the senate with four years left.
In Princeton an ambitious Chautauqua program features Irene Stolofsky with assisting artists and Sidney Landon impersonating famous authors. A morning children’s program runs from 10 o clock with Miss Kathleen Scott directing and Catherine Denny in character. Saturday offers the Cramer Kurz trio in costume and the top night event Turn to the Right, a celebrated comedy.
At Wednesday and Thursday evenings many patrons left the tent after the musical prelude. They are warned that leaving after the musical program tonight will cause them to miss one of the week’s most entertaining features. Sidney Landau is not a lecturer. his program is entertaining and should be heard by all.
June 10 Dod Nie Sheffer, linked to a double murder, is deemed insane by detectives. Authorities expect his potential conviction or acquittal to lead to commitment in an asylum.
An interstate commerce commission order grants common carriers including electric lines and water carriers authority to implement a 10 percent rate reduction for freight effective Saturdays without publishing schedules more than one day in advance. The move enables many carriers to set new rates by July 1 though some schedules remain unreleased. The order closes a string of suspensions that could block the general reduction.
Police Chief 8. H. Fettinger received a $25 check from Nova Knitting Mills of Philadelphia for arresting L. H. Goodman, a hosiery salesman and alleged swindler. Goodman was captured in Des Moines and sent back for charges. The mills request return of order pads and printed matter Goodman left, to prevent future misuse.
John Selby of Vincennes, a well known local figure, underwent a serious operation for acute appendicitis at a Vincennes hospital on Thursday at 2 o'clock. He tolerated the procedure well and is reported to be improving today. A prior accident at the golf course resulted in a fractured skull after being struck on the head by a golf club, which added misfortune in the days prior.
Italian customs and authorities are authorized to permit export of platinum sweeping dried vegetables and alimentary wheat pastes. The importation of precious stones without license has been authorized by the Italian government.
A Big Four passenger train struck an automobile at the Perkins avenue crossing in western Muncie killing four men instantly and fatally injuring a fifth. The victims Charles L. Taylor Rosewell Hart Charles Gehard and Vernon Barber were night shift workers at Muncie Products. The car, driven by Taylor, was said to be traveling fast and swerved toward the oncoming train when the signal was seen. The locomotive hit the car twice, front and rear.
Senator Borah challenged the ship subsidy bill as President Harding sought farm support. He accused a bloc of senators of aiming to gag debate with a cloture rule. Ten southern and southwestern farm leaders returned home after pledging to educate farmers on merchant marine legislation.
President Harding will open a conference with coal operators and miners in Washington as Hoover predicts a settlement to the 15 week strike. Officials say the broader aim is industry stabilization to achieve lasting peace in the coal fields.
State Troops police and the sheriff patrolled all roads in Denora Pennsylvania to halt about 100 striking miners reported on the march to wagon mines. The group traveled in seven trucks said to be stolen at Twilight from the Fry Coal mine, which was closed today.

Rory O Connell forces were driven from the Four Courts in a final Free State assault and collapsed. Three lorry loads of British forces were ambushed. Fierce street fighting followed as rebels fled to seized buildings.
Berlin reports a wide plot to overthrow the Wirth government with ninety arrests. Cabinet members are alleged targets for assassination similar to Rathenau’s fate. Lieut. Guenther, former Ludendorff secretary, implicated after police seized letters indicating ties to conspirators. Further arrests possible.
Ten orphan babies from New York were distributed to foster parents from Illinois at the La Porte Indiana railroad station. The transfer occurred today to comply with Illinois law banning such distribution. Women at the station displayed tickets matching infant numbers.
G. F. Stein of Milwaukee, contractor for the Hazleton bridge, is improving at the Methodist hospital after a Wednesday night accident between the city and Hazleton. He passed a restful night and shows no serious injuries. Mrs Stein arrived from Milwaukee to stay at his bedside during recovery.
