Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock IV won the opening race of the 1920 regatta at Sandy Hook New Jersey after defender Resolute suffered fatal rigging damage. Resolute led early but failed to finish. Shamrock IV must win two more of five races to claim the trophy.
Federal grand jury to investigate a large interstate auto theft conspiracy spanning Indiana Ohio and Kentucky. U S district attorney Fred Van Nuys says young Indianapolis workers steal cars send them to Cincinnati where they are sold then repeat the cycle returning to Indianapolis. Other linked cities include Terre Haute Louisville Akron and Columbus. Conspirators rendezvous sites identified and confessions of George Hodges held in Atlanta prison cited.
The senate approved increases including 50 000 for Ft Wayne school for feeble minded bringing total to 100 000 and 5 000 for Eastern Hospital for the Insane Richmond plus 28 179 16 for Laf ayette Soldiers Home. House earlier acted on minor measures and approved Rep Otto Fifield Lake county bill restoring lost amendments to county unit road law by 81 to 9.
The Fourteenth census bulletin from the Commerce Bureau shows Princeton and most county towns rising in population. Hezleton and Oakland City lag, Ft. Branch and Francisco rising due to coal, Owensville up only two. farms decline with cityward migration, Patoka Union and Center townships gaining.
The Indiana House, in session with rules suspended, approved a measure legalizing horizontal property tax valuation increases by a 63 to 30 vote. It advances to the Senate as the court had recently upheld the increases.
Lee Lockhart of near King Station suffered severe finger injuries when his right hand was caught in a hay fork pulley. He was lifting the device on a farm near his home when the accident occurred Wednesday morning.
The funeral for Peter Fine was held at his home on Thursday at 2:30 PM conducted by Rev C E Smith of the General Baptist church. Burial followed in Odd Fellows cemetery. Fine was born in Pennsylvania on April 7 1852 and moved to Indiana in 1877 after marrying the widow who survives him.
The Democrat editor laments poor road conditions in Gibson county with frequent chuck holes on highways including the Heston road near Heston woods. A Princeton merchant reportedly had tires and springs damaged by a sudden bump, highlighting danger to motorists and tourists asking road supervisors what is being done.

Cleon Harbinson aged 13, son of Mr and Mrs James Harbinson of Francisco, died at Methodist hospital at 7 pm Thursday after a skull fracture sustained when he stepped from a moving train near Francisco station Saturday night. Funeral at 10:30 am Sunday at Francisco Methodist Church, burial in Meade cemetery. Survived by parents four sisters and two brothers.
W R C members who attended a Thursday picnic at Mrs. Joe Laith home Ft Branch and several guests fell ill that night and Friday from an unknown cause. Fear of ptomaine poisoning faded as many improved within hours. Attendees included Mrs. William McClure Mrs. Henry Greer Mrs. Theodore Bucklin Mrs. J A Clark and others. The Laib family were improved though unsure of the illness cause. Affected guests blamed overindulgence of food fruit and ice water during hot weather. Mr and Mrs Harry K Stormont of Indianapolis visited relatives in town.
John Dyer of Vincennes urged farmer organization at Owensville High School auditorium. About 125 people attended as Dyer touted federations to secure fair prices and avoid oversupply, while Owensville school orchestra under Miss Gertrude Speck delivered a strong preview.
At the Indiana State Capitol Representative Charles Mendenhall levelled charges that fraud occurred in the last regular session by omitting amendments to the county unit road bill. Debate focused on restoring the so called lost amendments amid votes on road and tax related measures and suspension motions.
The July 15 weather at Burton Co shows a high of 86 and a low of 66 with clear skies. Compared to the same date last year the high was 86, the low 73, and precipitation 40.
Rural Express in Indianapolis reports that Indiana will host a new center for studying the economic value of motor trucks. The Motor Truck Association of America has opened offices in the city to examine rural express services and short haul potential for trucks.
Edgar Crecelius living northeast of the city reports an average of thirty one bushels of wheat per acre from a twelve acre field. This is the best yield heard of at this time. The Democrat’s columns remain open for reports on county wheat yields.
Lawrence Fichter sixteen, son of Gus Fichter, suffered lacerations and bruises to the right thumb and first two fingers when his hand touched revolving blades of an electric fan in the McFetridge pool room on North Main street. The injury occurred as he adjusted the fan in its bracket and was dressed by a physician.
