Missing naval balloon found in Lake Erie
A navy balloon from the national balloon race was found floating 25 miles southwest of Port Stanley Ontario in Lake Erie. The basket sank, gas remained, and no life signs were reported for Lieut. Roth and Wall of Lakehurst New Jersey. A Lake Erie steamer quartermaster sighted the bag and a towing tug was dispatched to Port Stanley. The last report placed the St Louis balloon down near Brockton New Jersey 425 miles from Indianapolis.

A balloon found southwest of Port Stanley Ont. is believed to be Roths, as Olmstead reported Roth chased him over the eastern Lake Erie edge before a violent thunder storm. Pilot H E Honeywell said the Lake Erie storm was the worst in 20 years. ballast was dumped to ride it out, and Roth was not far behind before the storm struck.
