In Illinois, women and sisters of strikers led a mob of about 1000 at Burnside and nearby towns. Rockthrowing targeted homes of workers who refused to join, while picket lines formed at several shops as demonstrations spread.
In Logansport Indiana authorities reinforced workers and swore in special deputy sheriffs to curb attacks on strikebreakers at the Pennsylvania railroad shops. Sheriff John Miller said state troops would only be used as a last resort after Governor McCray directed restraint. Adjutant General Smith arrived to review the situation as tensions between labor and strikers and rail workers escalated.
Indianapolis reports strikers at the Big Four shops in Urbana and other cities are being blocked by J V Hart general chairman of machinists. A few workers return to jobs in Indianapolis Anderson Ansonia and Sheranville while rail officials hire replacements. Hart claims officials are misinformed about strikers returning to work and a mass meeting for supporters is planned.
July 6 dispatch says railroad signal men delay planned walkout after D W Tiett announces no orders before Saturday following talks with the United States railroad labor board. Rumors say a conference between Ben Hooper of the board and Bert Jewell of the shop unions may aim to settle disputes.
Clarence M. Lawrence, longtime assistant cashier, was unanimously chosen as cashier of Peoples American National Bank to replace John W. Yochum who resigned. Yochum began as a bookkeeper in 1893 and rose to cashier before retiring. Lawrence joined in 1902 and has served as assistant cashier, earning broad approval for his promotion.
Walter James Folk, the 4 year old son of Mrs Esther Folk, died at his grandparents home in Baldwin Heights. Death was due to Brights disease. Funeral services were held at the residence Wednesday morning at 10 20 conducted by Rev C A Wade. Burial followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
Mrs Emma Coleman 27 wife of Francis Coleman of Oakland City died today after a serious operation at Methodist Hospital Friday night. The body was taken to Oakland City. no funeral arrangements have been made. Survived by her husband and several children.
Mrs J M Skelton died at 2 o clock this afternoon at the home of John Tooley near the Southern shops. Full particulars will be announced Saturday.
Crosswell Elliott, quartermaster first class on the U S Overton, writes from Russia about famine and shootings. He recalls people starving, water shortages, and Bolshevik confiscations as he travels toward Novorossiysk while ships bring aid. Elliott, once a Princeton city newsboy, re-enlisted after a four-year term and plans to be away another year before a return visit.
Indiana forecast shows thunderstorms tonight with fair cooler conditions on Saturday. Highest 83 and low 65 expected, with a later high of 98 and low 73 on another day. Early morning temperatures at 6 a m are 42 with 56 low. sunset 7 16 and sunrise 4 34. A B Burton recorded the report.
The state highway bridge at Larleton is advancing quickly with concrete piers near completion. Stein Construction employs a large crew with temporary bridge in use. piling spans the river and cranes and machinery are in place to sink the caissons. The Wehepeee south approach and levee approach from the south are nearly finished. Steel structure work is expected to start in a few weeks.
The headquarters battery of the 189th field artillery holds a 7 30 PM drill in the small court room. This second drill follows initial training with Captain Ben H Watt presiding. Four more drills are planned before the unit ships to Camp Knox Kentucky on July 28.
John M Seacat transfers 40 acres in northwest quarter to William P Seg eat. Lester McFatridge transfers to Edward Wirtz of Princeton. Joseph B Liles transfers to Willard De Wright with Brang addition to Archer's only pf lot 2 for 2800 dollars.
A very pretty ceremony took place Thursday at 3 30 PM at the Christian church parsonage in Mt Carmel. Venita Mills and Walter Nichols both of Princeton joined in matrimony with Rev Southgate performing the ring ceremony. The couple will reside with the bride’s sister Mrs William Green at 610 West Emerson Street after returning to this city. The bride wore a white canton crepe dress and the groom, son of Mr and Mrs CW Nichols, works as a truck driver for the Rothschild laundry.
State highway commissioners will inspect the Hazleton bridge Monday meeting at Hazleton with local boosters. After touring the bridge progress they will review the Dixie Bee to Evansville concrete road project including 10 miles of roadway opposite Ft Branch. Local boosters will accompany the trip to outline southern Indiana needs.
Vincennes Cubs directors decided to quit playing there due to low attendance caused by coal and railroad strikes. Salaries of players and management caused concern as some members plan to play Sunday ball.
Harry Dibble pleaded guilty to a speeding offense in city court and paid a fine of five dollars plus costs after a Thursday appearance. Patrolman James Elliott and Mayor Niemeier are named in the dispatches with other city court entries noting fines and costs for similar charges.
President Harding weighing a wartime style fuel conservation plan as a mine strike drags on. The scheme would assign priority coal rights to critical users starting with government and railroads, then public utilities and essential industries, with private and nonessential users later.
Jesse Reiser and Angels Cozzi of Philadelphia depart for Mt Carmel on a route through Illinois Missouri Arkansas to Louisiana to attend the national American Legion convention in October. They met Norman Hart commander of the Princeton post and were hosted by the Legion with room and meals.
Iain William Hunt was arrested here Thursday on a charge of conducting a lottery connected with a local suit club. Hunt, a collector for Budd Tailoring Co of Evansville, was implicated by his dealings in the club which sells suits on payments.
American tennis star Molla Mallory defeated Mrs Beamish 6 2 6 2 in the Wimbledon women's singles semi final. Suzanne Lenglen, European champion, beat Mrs Peacock to advance and will meet Mallory in the next round.
Washington July 7 The United States will not be dry for 25 years Prohibition Commissioner Haines estimates that while the country is theoretically dry it cannot reach aridity until liquor supplies are exhausted He says about 38 000 000 gallons of liquor remain in federal warehouses and at the present rate for medicinal use it will take 95 years to exhaust the supply
London censors have banned the drug-themed film Cocaine after viewing it. They criticized its depiction amid a vice surge and ruled it unshowable. They also list other targets such as drunkenness vice leg exposure and graphic violence.
At a board meeting the Princeton Chamber of Commerce adopted a resolution opposing any toll rate increase by Indiana Bell Telephone Company currently under review by the Public Service Commission. Mayor Niemeier will lead a delegation to the Indianapolis hearing, and the secretary was tasked to send the resolution to state and city officials while the next forum is set for June 18 at the Joyce barn.
A Petersburg committee and the Daviess county board of commissioners discussed a White River bridge at Rogers six miles north of Petersburg. They want a state highway north through Washington to Bloomfield, Greene county, creating a direct Evansville to Indianapolis route while the State Highway Commission backs a north south road through Pike county and seeks a similar path through Daviess county.
